you have made a wise choice sir!
This is the way i have installed the mods - and have no problems at all -
install game, then patches 4.08 + (optional) 4.09, then the unified installer. At this point you should have a game working with most of the best mods going
the flak + special effects mods + any other mod you might want should be added 1 at a time at this point, if the game crashes or something you will know what the issue is and it shouldn't be too difficult to undo the changes you made.
you shouldn't need either the AAA sound mod, as a version of is is included in the unified installer, nor will you need the mod activator - as this is already sorted by the unified. Sound mod by jaffa (i think) might be more hassle than it is worth for now - as it will probably conflict with the unified installer sound mod... and it replaces files added by the unified installer (you could try backing up these files and giving it a go?)
