a lot of people seem infatuated with late-war fantasy Luftwaffe variants that barely got off the drawing board than other, more significant planes.

And its just that, an infatuation. There are very few mods that are WIP for fantasy Luftwaffe aircraft. I personally think that yes, this would make a nice mod but at the moment there is a sufficient in game stand in. I would honestly prefer more effort be put into aircraft that have been WIP since the dawn of time, such as the Wellington, Lancaster, Neptune and Ju88 variants than to have an additonal Thunderbolt in game.
