My two cents worth:
I'm not advocating anarchy here but when something like this UI comes along and someone says, as was said by Bee in another thread, "The people who created this package have your best interests at heart" I feel like another government bill has been passed.
Where I live our freedoms are being taken away in, to paraphrase the government lackeys who write these bills, "your best interests." I can no longer take resposibility for many of my actions. I have to wear a motorcycle helmet. I have to wear a seat belt. I can no longer smoke where I want to when I want to. Granted, all these are supposedly common sense issues but none the less, if I choose to kill myself slowly or quickly, let me make the damn choice on my own! I'm even willing to pay for the pleasure, but oh, no, I must be saved from myself!
Getting back to the UI install: Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm sure you will), but two things come to mind. 1) Many planes have been made downloadable individually. Why not the ones in the UI? Please, let me make the choice which plane(s) I choose to install in my game. I'll struggle to install it and be happy when it works. 2) If a host chooses only to allow those with the UI installed then I'm pretty sure a server hosting a game can ascertain whether or not a player has UI and can be stopped if he/she doesn't have it. If this is not the case then perhaps a flag should be inserted into the UI to announce its presence to hosts.
Choice issues aside, there seems to be problems with bandwidth and download speeds. We don't all have cable/DSL; out in the countryside here the only game in town is dial-up. Please don't get me wrong but don't assume that because you have the high speed hookup we all do. Small downloads may be the only choice some folks have or risk leaving their computers to cook away overnight dl'ing something as massive as the UI.
In summary: fly_zo said "i remember time before AAA UI and all those requests for "global" mod pack .... one pack to rule them all .... you really can't please all people." Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but on this issue I think you really can.
Ok, enough of my rant.
Great days all.
