IDing enemy planes isn't too bad, as long as you know what your side is flying and what the other side is. The only real problems I have are when clipped-wing Spits and 109s are both up; from certain angles and at a distance it gets hard to tell one from the other. I run at 1280x1024 but all I can see are specks until the plane gets to about twice my guns range, so if I see a speck I'll quickly note which way it's going and how fast, then if there's any lingering doubt I'll head for it and linger just out of guns range. Obviously it's not so easy when they're head-on to you, but if you follow them around enough for them to give you a full-planform shot, it should be fairly easy to tell which side they belong to.
