I've on-line friends who I fly against and to insure compatibility for mutiplay I've always given them the following install set-up:
Install the game (presumably version 4.07),
install the patch that updates version 4.07 into 4.08
install the unified installer (viewforum.php?f=58)
Once you are at that point, you can add other mods one by one, but take your time and choose which ones you want and which you think important. Some mods will conflict with others. So take your time with these.

And then here's a tip for when you have your game up and running again as you want it:
Make a copy of the game and try new mods out on the copy first before installing them in the game you use to fly in.
Then if something goes wrong that you can't fix, you can delete the malfunctioning copy and start with your back-up copy.
