Hi Hairhog,
I doubt that by 1942 Bong flew a P-38J, but most certainly a P-38G or H.
This affair happened over Buna recently captured area and Dobodura airfield (in construction).
The P-38 pilots weren't yet integrated in the 9th FS of the 49ers' (Fighter Group) but members of the 39th FS.
The pilots were :
Capt Tom Lynch,
Wingman Dick Bong
Leader Ken Spraks
Wingman John Magnus.
They defend the airfield attacked by Vals escorted by Zeros and Oscars.
Bong's aircraft was #15 "Thumper".
Lynch get a Hamp (A6M3 Zero) and Bong a "Hamp" that was running for Lynch Lighting and then a Val after a long dive to escape the rest of the japanese escort. He then flew back to Port Moresby.
