Yes, those are annoying, and I have yet to figure out what is causing that. I may just paint the reefs away from these places...there are certain places where you can see grid lines in the water as well, east of Vangunu I think.

OK, I made a JSGME version of 4.09 so I could see the new texture concepts. Just not sure on the pine trees. Looks better from the air, but... damn hard to say.

Is there a tga for the forest layers? Is that what the 0 through 4 wood things are? What is woodmask?

Idea (messing with this in another window, lol):

Use a few different wood layers at the same time.

Just messign around at random, I used this combo:

Wood0 = forest/summer/sk_Wood0.tga
Wood1  = forest/summer/Jungle1.tga
Wood2 = forest/summer/sk_Wood2.tga
Wood3 = forest/summer/Jungle2.tga
Wood4 = forest/summer/sk_Wood4.tga

I figured the sk_wood is too perfectly connifer, but it's dark. The stock jungle is bright green... but I was in Kaua'i last spring, and it was pretty damn bright green sometimes. Maybe throw burma jungle in there, too...

The combo above looks like this:

For comparison, I was using the straight jungle before I had 409 available:

Clearly my new experiment is darker than the straight jungle, but not as dark as the recent images skunk and cheech posted.


Just trying to think outside the box. Too bad you can't have 2 different WOOD versions, I'd be inclined to try and make a layered Palm grove (planted in rows) for the 2d one.

We could also make a new tga, right? Dark like the sk_wood, but not so obviously pine trees?

That would be my goal, a lot darker than oleg's (luthier's?) jungle, but not pine trees.

Maybe open the jungle tgas, make them darker, then add them back with a new name (or just replace them and make all the jungle maps look better?)?

Many of the airfield objects and large facilities, like Tulagi, have to wait until we have "locked-in" the coastlines and the terrain elevations, which is just about done. Almost all of the small native villages are in, and one or two of the plantations. Here is a shot of one of the small villages, Visale, near Cape Esperance.

Here is a shot of the Iwi Plantation, on the northeast coast of Bouganville. The village of Korimira is in the background.

As you can see from the screen shot of a small portion of the 2D map below, the attention to detail, when it comes to village identification and placement (villages shown in pink font) is exhaustive. The information for plantation, village placement, and period correct naming convention is taken from Thrud's (T) superb research, using the late-1930s British Admiralty charts of the region. You will also notice that the map includes prominent landmarks, so that pilots can adequately identify current location, and use the online map to properly navigate The_Slot.

Really cool experiment, spud. But the annoyance with the jungle textures is that you get lots of lines that make them look like a carpet was layed down.
