Hi Slot team guys?
I don't want to be pushy or anything, but next Friday (9 May) is my 40th birthday. I've been following this thread quietly since the beginnning, waiting for release....
Any chance this map will be done by then? If not, so be it...but what an AWESOME birthday present this would be! I've been playing (living?) IL-2 non-stop since the original release in 2001. Big Grin Big Grin
It'd also help soften the blow of the recent demise of all my FW190's. Thread (The link is inoperative), and thread viewtopic.php?t=4606 refer...
It seems there is no cure for this issue of my missing FW's, short of a reinstall from scratch... Sad
Thing is, this Slot map would help me get my mind off that, and focus on some PF action - who needs 190's in the Pacific?
I could reacquaint myself with the Corsairs, Wildcats, Dauntless, etc...which I admit I've been neglecting to a large degree, lately...shame on me.
Heck, i have this sim at around 333 flyable aircraft currently, this should keep me busy for a WHILE to come, along with exploring all the new maps, etc.
Anyways, it's late, I've had a few, time to crash...keep up the good work!
I'll hope for, but not demand, a 40th birthday present from you guys!
Cheers! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

I can't believe Oleg missed it so far. Instead of developing the BOB SOW he would have done better to have carefully addressed the Pacific War.

The Islands scenery, the ships, the airbases, the ocean and aircraft would have been so much more interesting to players. The weather, the views all would have made for a fabulous eye candy feast.

The diversity of combat options are awesome.

The Battle of Britain was a great battle that lasted one summer, over flat uninteresting terrain and all the engagements were air combat with early WW2 aircraft. I've been doing the BOB II WOV, which is an offline game with the best AI performance of any CFS available now. It isn't boring, but it doesn't interest me at all if compared to this MOD and doing the Pacific war with IL2 series.

Too bad someone with some clout couldn't get Oleg to listen to what most people "really want".

They're just going to squawk and complain on the 1C:Maddox site about this site and the MODS to IL2 series. They just don't get it. This site is sending the biggest message... these are the things people want.

I read hundreds of postings on the Zoo where people indicated clearly what they want. Ubi put up the forums... for what, since no one ever seemed to listen. Oleg, shut down all interface with his users early on. All the fanboys blamed Olegs disappearance on those people who complained. , Forums are just written words. No one was in Oleg's face twisting his ear to get him to listen. LOL

I love it guys, keep up the good work. It appears we'll get what we want from our own community of users.

Battle of Britain over boring flat terrain??? Are you for real?
You happen to be interested primarily by the Pacific theatre and that's ok, but there are thousands of us that have been waiting for SoW and all that it entails..
I also have a love of the Pacific war too, in particular the early stages, with all the aircraft that entails, plus the knowledge that alot of them are missing in IL'2s Pacific fighters!
And how do you know what would be more interesting to players? You only speak for yourself, not for the thousands upon thousands of flight simmers out there..
As regards eye candy, if the green fields of England and her coastline are modelled anywhere near correctly, it will be a visual feast for any flight sim junkie..
I've been waiting patiently for this map as it's much needed for it's historical accuracy as well as the fantastic attension to detail that the team are endeavouring to supply.. But there are many areas out there with equal importance that require the same attension to detail don't you think?

I do the BOB II WOV quite abit. I'm not ignorant of the terrain (no mountains) or extreme terrain changes, except for Dover. There is certainly a need for more objects in the BOB II WOV, but no matter where you fly it's all about the same. The BOB MAP MOD that is being done now looks great.

I'm sure Oleg will do his best to do the BOB justice. The battle of britain was air combat, from the British side. If the weapons are modeled correctly shooting the .303s from the Hurricane or Spit and trying to take down HE111s is a daunting task at best.

I like the later war aircraft, the speed, power and weapons. I like the carriers, and the land bases to stage combat missions. I like attacking ground and sea targets as well.

So, I think the Battle of Britain was a great battle worthy of a competent CFS. I just think there is more interest in the Pacific. The Pacific war requires a multitude of aircraft, vehicle and ships types. Then of course you have the largest area for a war of WW2, with combat areas extending throughtout the Pacific Islands, to Pacific Rim countries, Australia, New Guinea, Japan, CHina.

Again, I'm not knocking the BOB. I just think there will be more interest that lasts a great deal longer in the Pacific than the BOB.

Let's us not forget that "BoB" is not the whole sim. It's the first part. It's unfair to consider Storm of War as just "BoB", but that's the tendency, still, after all this time

"The same" terrain is a sword that cuts both ways here. If you choose to look at Guadalcanal a certain way, you can argue that it is "all the same" and even "just like any other island there". You can also look at a map of England and the Channel coast and consider all the famous landmarks, of which the White Cliffs of Dover are but one. For instance, how many Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace equivalents are there in the Solomons? None. No distinctive cities with famous landmarks like Big Ben, just jungle mountains and rivers

So it depends on how you look at the two areas- I can argue that the Solomons is just as "boring" landscape-wise as the Atlantic coast of Europe because they are "just mountainous jungle islands"

The work that the Slot team has done is in my opinion stellar, and I've only seen a little bit of it. It is a long overdue and critical addition to the flawed project Ilya (not Oleg Wink ) and company called Pacific Fighters, probably the single largest omission of that omission-laden project. The Slot should have been the first map they did, but honestly, had they done it, it would have been as rife with error as the Eastern Front maps were when Il2 shipped (and still are) so I'm glad it was the Slot Team and not RRG when all is said and done

Fly over southern England and the home counties for real, and then tell me WoV is accurate..lol! Confusedhock:
I have BoBII and have played it extensively, and although it is good in some respects, it's rendition to actual terrian is piss poor..
Compare it to IL2 and what the guys are doing here, and WoV is not in the same league by any measure..
I look at the work being done here and on other much needed maps and I'm astounded that Oleg didn't take map accuracy and detail to this level as IL2 progressed. Much respect to our map modders for their determination to see this through! Smile

Smile Hello Gentelman,I as other members of this forum very much respect your opinion, objection and excellent contributions to IL2,but I think we should stay focused on "The Slot" as this is the subject at hand, the release of this map will change IL2 from now until? I think we should stay focused here, the ZOO is a ZOO because of unfocused arguments that turn into LOCKS,

As I've said I respect you guy's for your knowlege and passion for our hobby but I need to say please stay on topic.

Smile Thanks

You will definitely need version 4.09b1 for The Slot. We considered modifying it run on 4.08, but it was just too much work for a version of the game that will soon be obsolete.

You will also need to find the best version of the .dll files for your particular video card. I have a GTX 8800 768, and find the 2/4/08 version works the best for me. All of the other versions I tried caused anomalies with the reefs and coastlines.

Will all of our mods work with 4.09b1 ??? Confusedhock:
