you could look for gmax if torrents bother you. Its pretty much a stripped down free version of max. But it might be kinda hard to find. I really was just use a torrent. 3,500 for some software is outrageous.

I would suggest to use 3ds max 9 because of superior 3ds support.

A free alternative is Wings3D, but I'm not sure if it's compatible with IL2. However, the SH3/SH4 modders have done some remarkable things with it so it might be worth looking into.
