I've tried unsuccessfully to convert some of your pics(JPGs) into 1024X768 TGA files. Everything looks okay file size and format wise, but for some inexplicable reason I cannot get them to work as Splash Screens. I don't know why.

If you solve the problem, please let me know as I'd like to use "To the Victor" as my Splash Screen.

Jim...Check for a PM from me...

Meanwhile, for anyone: Has anyone created a correct replacement background TGA file/image using PaintShopPro? The advice for using Photoshop is fine, but I don't have PhotoShop...and the steps and terminology don't match up with PSP.

You need to resize the image so that it is square. Squish it to 1024x1024 and it will work for you. The game will then stretch it back to normal when it displays.

Doh!!! How stupid of me! I knew that Step from four or five years ago when I first made new background screens (*.tga files) for most of the various campaign/career, etc, menus. Returning to IL2 after 18+ months absence, I hadn't seen anything in these threads on changing the title screen regarding the resizing (and aspect ratio change). Of course it makes absolutely logical sense that the same resizing step would be required! Again, I should have immediately known that.
Thanks for helping me/us out.

By the way, I use PaintShopPro to modify any desired image (jpg) in its normal aspect ratio, and then use IrfanView to convert the *.jpg file to the resized 1024X1024 *.tga file. For some reason, the output TGA formatted file differs between the two Applications....the one from IrfanView works.

FYI, my SplashScreen now looks like this:

Download the "Tough Day" Splash Screen file here:
http://files.filefront.com/backgroundTou...einfo.html

Rename the file to " background.tga " and place into your IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\SplashScreen\GUI folder (Backing up your original Splash Screen as you deem necessary).

Here's what the "Tough Day" Splash Screen looks like:

Many thanks to Jim Dietz for allowing us to use these images of his wonderful artwork. FYI, I have hanging on the wall of my Den a framed numbered Artist's Proof print of "Tough Day", with a personal remarque by Mr. Dietz. For those who may not be familar with the term, a remarque is a small, personalized drawing or symbol that an artist adds (near his or her signature) on a print. "Tough Day" (#98/100) is my prized art possession!

I have been searching for several years for a Print of "To the Victor", my current Splash Screen and the other half of my SigBlock, below. It is a rare print, long ago sold out from the original retailer. If you see something you really like at The Art of James Dietz website, I suggest you not delay your decision on making a purchase.

P.S.
I also have a framed numbered Print of Mr. Dietz' "The Old Hand"

I also have a Poster version of Mr. Dietz' "Silver Wings"
