Trenches, trenches, trenches!

I have an idea for a Terrain Mod that I, as an avid mission-builder, would really LOVE to see!

Right now I'm building trench systems both in North Africa and on the Eastern Front, and it's taxing and monotonous, as you have to sit and piece together those small trench pieces, and you almost always need a greeeeat length in order for it to be spotted from the air, and thus be meaningful. :x

Would it be possible to make one Trench terrain object that is, say, TEN times the length of the longest one now available? It would really make a lot of mission-builders lives much easier...

(And - now I'm really wishing out loud here - would it be possible to make it more of the "staggered" variety, as seen in both World Wars? For example seen here: http://www.worldwar1.com/special/btw/btw083.gif

That'd be pretty cool. You would have to make two types of rench, though. The Germans used a completely different shape and style to the allies.

Ive had a sudden thought. What about a Maginot Line map?

Differentiated trenches, why not, but I would be perfectly happy with just a LOOOONG stretch of trench.

Those trenches look nice...with the men inside too ....but I don't like the pattern you've arranged them in as it looks a bit too regular.....are they in a single line or actually a U-shape?

For long trenches which only LOOK correct you could do something similar to the rivers and streams I did with those plates ...but not all that good as the ground needs to be flat where they are placed...and they have a sort of shimmer to them when looking from afar

At the moment they're just 'U' shaped parts. However, have a look at the link in the first post - they were often arranged in such a regular pattern.

I agree with Canon here: these diagrammatic forms were very, very often followed in real life. There are many, many air photos showing this. And for a reason: being an ex-Army man myself I've built a fair number of Field Fortifications, and you actually follow a pretty strict pattern, by the book - of course adapted to nature.

My point is not that there never were variations - of course there was - but if we have the following new trench objects:

A.) Canons single "U"-shape
B.) A number (say, 4, or 5) pre-interconnected "U"-shapes

and COMBINE these with the already existing trench objects, I say we can build pretty much any trench system we want, and we can do it FAST!!!

PS. Good luck with the young one. Have two myself, and the first weeks after the birth are actually pretty calm: they just sleep, eat and poop. So hopefully you will be able to complete that map everybodys waiting for. But still: this is just a game - kids are Real Life, and they always go first!

Very good idea!
Canon, not sure possible or even that important but I'd like to see at the edges of the trenches interspersed earth and transparent areas such that the trench blends with the ground texture, maybe like adding a simple plate to the object, same shape as trench but slightly larger and that plate textured with earth but having transparent holes in it? Like the grass or dirt airfield plates which have the same feature.
BTW, larger trenches would be difficult to place on uneven terrain, so it's good to have small and large trench segments for that...

EDIT: or maybe not modifying the 3D object but just adding some green patches to the edges of the earth texture, making look a bit irregular too.
