Troubleshooting the Splashscreen Mod

Hello my peeps!

Hmm... another day, another problem, eh? :wink:

Anywho, so I was using the nice splashscreen mod - and that worked very well - until I installed the sound mod .93. Then the mod splashscreen overwrote my B-29 screen, and I was fine with that. Now I go to put one of my own screens in place of it, and I either get the mod screen or the crappy Russian screen (no offense to any ruskies 'round here - great hockey by the way...).

So, in a fit of rage, I put my screen in Files/GUI, and in MODS/STD/gui.
Yet all I get is the Russian.

OR

If I use my screen in only Files/GUI, where it's supposed to go, the mod screen shows up.
Never my screen, though. Cry

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Try the splash screen folder in your mods folder thats where I run my custom splash from.

Hmm... Did you use the UI?
I didn't... so there is no such folder in my MODS. Cry

I'm still using sound mod v0.9. I put my cutom splash screen tgas in MODS/fly_zo_FB_gui/gui.

Dang, still no joy.
The only way for me to get to any sort of "gui" file is through MODS/STD/gui

That's it, besides going through "Files", but that doesn't work either...

Gentlemen (err... ladies?), I believe we have found a bug! (or just something that needs to be updated :wink: )

Simply do a search in yor MODS folder for "background0.tga".
If you find none, simply put a tga picture in 1024 x 768 Pixels (4:3) format and WITHOUT compression
into "MODS\anyfoldernameyoulike\GUI".
That should do it.

Hint: make sure you are labelling the tga file 'background0.tga', not 'background.tga'

The opening splashscreen uses the former, campaigns the latter. You will also need a 'background0.mat' beside the 'background0.tga'. It doesn't matter whether you use 'files>gui' or 'mods>splashscreen>gui'

Check the "_ru" version of the .mat file

Of course you can always edit the name in background0_ru.mat to that of your desired splash screen.

No, you won't need the 'backround0_ru.mat', since 'background0.tga' is already specified in the standard .mat.
You only need the mat file if you want to give the background .tga another name (anyname.tga).
Then you'll have to change the file name accordingly in the .mat file, but with my method (what i wrote in my last post) you don't even need to extract any files from the sfs archives, only create the correct folder structure in the 'MODS' folder and you're good to go.

Yet, after hours of messing around with this, I am tired.
It doesn't even give me that much appeal as it used to - what's all the tinkering for if it's only a few seconds of loading time to see my screenshot?

Anyway, heres what I did:

The splashscreen changing mod by UF_Josse tells us, of course, to add in filelist.txt:
"gui/background.tga
gui/background0_ru.mat"

I have deleted that portion altogether.
I deleted the background0_ru.mat and background.tga (the AAA splashscreens) from MODS/STD/gui.

I made an entirely new folder in MODS called "splashscreen"
The order goes like this:

MODS/splashscreen/GUI

In the GUI File I have:
background0.mat
background0.tga

Yet all I get is the home splashscreen (for most it should be a Corsair).
So, if anyone would like to point out what I did wrong, I would still be very grateful!
Even though I am extremely tired and discouraged, doesn't mean I've quit! :wink:

Also, I do not believe it is my .tga that is a problem, there is no reason why. It is a regular IL-2 screenshot, except I added a bit of wordart from MS Digital Image 2006 Editor, the default program to open .tga files.

Although, the possibility is still open that my edited screenshot is bad - before the sound mod my unaltered screenshots worked. The problem coincides with my installation of sound mod v.93.

Hey Dr. Strangelove, you made some errors, only minor, but fatal in this case.
Your folder structure is correct, you only need to change the naming of the files in there.
Either: Change the name of the mat file to background0_ru.mat and make sure the correct tga is referenced in the mat file
Or: Delete the mat file and make sure that the background0.tga (notice the 0) file has NO compression.
(The tga has got to have no compression in every case.)

Edit: I just read that you've edited the screenshot of yours and re-saved it, most programs apply a compression when you do that. Be sure to save without it. Gimp for example can do that.

Thank you a dozen times over, mate!

It seems it was my edited screenshot causing all the problems!

I simply changed the .tga pics from the edited to original, and all is well!

... So you say GIMP saves w/o compression? Hmm... I'll definitely look into that.
But, do you know if GIMP can decompress a compressed image (if that makes sense)?

I put a type of wordart on my original screenshot that just says IL-2 Sturmovik, and it's a lot better than just the plain old screenshot. So, what I'm trying to say is, can I take my edited screenshot into GIMP and save it again, so that GIMP can decompress the whole thing?

If you use Gimp, "Save as" should give you the option for compressed or uncompressed. Compressed usually comes up as default setting; so check your options when saving.

No problem, Dr.Strangelove.
You can uncompress your compressed image.
It goes like this: Open Gimp, create a new .tga, open your old .tga in Gimp, cut it out/ copy it, insert into the new .tga you created at the beginning, save the new .tga and when it asks you for a name and gives you several saving options, look that you uncheck the compression.
Your old .tga with compression will then be saved as a new one without compression.

I hope that made sense to you :lol:
You can for example see in Irfanview if an image has compression.


And i live in Chemnitz, which is about 75 kilometers south-west of Dresden.
I just was in Dresden last weekend.
