Wait a minute... Does anyone remember a show from the late sixties called Rat Patrol? We could use jeeps and go blow up Rommel's tanks! I always wanted to be Tully.
This would open up an entirely new facet of IL2 - completely historic battles of anything - planes, trains, and automobiles! Well, tanks too, of course.
Where would it end?
Great days all.
I completely agree and feel the same way, that is why I was curious as to how to edit the game's files (the thread is about 2-3 pages back by now), how do you decide who to tell, btw? Kinda excited only to hit a brick wall... :? . Anyhow (back to drivable land-sea vehicles), It really in essence shouldn't be anything different from adding a new plane:
Add a new duplicate plane, replace the model files and move the gunner positions (Thinking back to the flyable B-29 mod, the camera was off the gunners, was it that you can move the camera or is it that you can remotely control gunners, if the latter, then controlling entire gun batteries should be possible...), replace the guns with some... er high calibur guns (from 50 cal to 14 in
). Then change the flight model and engines so that it can't achieve takeoff speed, with a lift of 0. From there its just tweaking the armor and sfx related to engines. Make it a boatplane for a ship, and a normal plane for a tank.
I really wish I could do something... not that I really have much time to do it, though.
Hmm... on the 'Pacific Islands' map, you're a Fletcher DD raiding IJN shipyards, you jump to a AAA battery gunner seat, and fend off a wave of dive and torpedo bombers. You turn around to face the bay, and let off a nice swarm of torpedoes at the same time you light up with your main 5" gun array.
Or a Sherman tank, in a small battle group having to menuever behind a Tiger tank to get a shell on the thin back armor. Or BE the tiger tank, blasting away a wave after wave of shermans which can hardly scratch the paint XD .
Add the fact that they're dogfight missions, and it'd be amazing. On a single map (lets say after Normandy, in france) players push forward in tanks, M-16 AA Halftracks, and call on an air strike and allied player Tempests come in and sweep up a defensive line, player Tiger tanks and Panzer-IV's desperately fight off the attacks. A german player Whiblewind shoots down the Tempest. The phrase: "AAA stole the kill" would have a completely new meaning
.
EDIT: I just noticed the train part(of the quote)... This would be neat: One side has to get an armored train with a VIP accross a certain area and ppl can play as tanks escorting it, or AA halftracks, or planes covering it. The other team could play as tanks attacking it, stationary guns, or planes attacking it.
That'd mean... I support the idea of playable land/sea vehicles, I guess.
