Number placing on P-51-Ds and P-47s
#1

Since it is possible to mod everything else in this game now, would it be possible to move the numbers on the P-51Ds and P-47s to someplace more correct please? As of right now, they are too far down on the fuselage.

It seems the data that needs modifying for this in inside the mesh itself. If there is some way to edit this, I'd very much like to see a tutorial. I'm very keen to put the hours in to do it, if it is a known method.

I will seriously consider starting a religion and worshipping anybody who sorts this out, the inability to use correct squadron markings on US aircraft has bugged me for ages. The numbering system that is used in the vanilla version look like an afterthought and a hasty one at that.

I know Jarink has a mat manager that does something similar with P-51B and B-17G aircraft but it doesn't work with any other aircraft. Just wondering if it can be done with a mat manager that is around. I know I would sure like to have my planes with the correct codes or lacking that, having the numbers in the right place so that they at least LOOK like that's where they go instead of falling off the fuselage.

Okay, here's a thought.

If the P-51C has the correct placing of the letter codes for the P-51, then why can't it be transferred to the other P-51s and the P-47?

How is it created?
Can it be duplicated?

With all the other work being done on acft, I find it so difficult to believe that this defect has been left for so long. So much time and energy is being expended on other aircraft and these two planes (P-47 and P-51D) are being pushed aside.

We have people making Mat managers to create "NEW' counties and squadrons, yet this is being left out.

Why?

I've been wondering about this for some time myself. I haven't yet found out where the game assigns which set of .mat files go with different planes. That's one key. I'm pretty sure it's not in the meshes, since the P-51D has the 3-digit numbers when a US nationality is assigned, but has correct squadron/radio call letter codes when RAF is assigned. I don't think it's a default skin thing, either, since those are just .tga with alphas.

Another issue to figure out is where the location (and size limits) of the applied .mats is done.

Unfortunately, that utility I made a while back was only able to change the color and style of the letters as they were applied to the B-17G and P-51B/C. This is actually easy to do by specifying different sets of .tga files in the .mat files. (This is also how MAT-Manager works, by the way) Size, location, opacity, etc. can be adjusted in the .mat files as well, though there are limits to how far an insignia can be moved on the skin. Move it to far and it gets cut off.

JARINK,
I have used your Mat manager. Your P-51B mats are good, but when they move to the /C the back letter gets cut off.

That was the major factor in trying to find out how all this can be corrected.

I am using the mat manager from Aces_Artwork and they seem to have moved the numbers on the P-51 and 47, but they still use the numbers. I just need to figure out how to change the tga file that they use. the font is STENCIL, but they also have the USAAF font, but I can't get the game to recognize it for some reason.

There has to be some way to get the P-51 and P-47 to use the Alpha numeric code. I just don't have the knowledge to get in there and fiddle with it.
