Meaning of Certain Parameters in Map Load.ini files
#1

Because of the new Bender's Cloud Mod, I tinkered around with the cloud textures and found I could actually make them work.

But this also caused me to wonder what other parameters can be changed around to greater effect in map load.ini files. I came across these entries:

[WORLDPOS]
CAMOUFLAGE = SUMMER
MONTH=12
DECLIN = 49
PRESSURE = 745
TEMPERATURE = 10

And while I understand the month, and temperature settings (in centigrade I presume) and what they do to a map in terms of gameplay, I was wondering if anyone could explain the meaning and especially the effects of the other settings: camouflage, declin and pressure.

I am sure 'pressure' refers to barometric pressure, but how does that effect gameplay?

And 'declin' (declination? of what?) is a mystery to me.

And lastly, what is camouflaged when 'summer' is chosen for instance?

It's wonderful to be able to understand how parameters effect the game, and from being a member here I've already learned more than I ever would have expected, for which I thank everyone who's provided their knowledge and expertise to forum members.. But once you've started to learn and understand a process, then you really want to go further.

I can help with the Summer Camouflage option. This tells the map whether to use objects with summer or winter skins, i.e: ground vehicles,etc(those that have a winter option). Also lets default winter skins for AC appear, instead of default summer. :wink:
I'm sure someone can help with the others soon... :wink:
oh, the DECLIN parameter, afaik, will set the amount of darkness at night, ie: some maps don't get as dark as others as night.

... as far as i know if you change the temperature you can turn water into ice for ex, try -15, or rain into snow ... and these are Centigrade figures

I always presumed that DECLIN referred to the declination of the sun, but it could just as well be the moon, or indeed both. I lean towards it being the sun because the moon in-game has no phases and simply comes up every night at the same time with the same appearance.
I've not played about with it but if you know the Latitude of your map you should be able to adjust it so that the sun transits at the correct angle to the earth and for the correct number of hours. As we have just a Summer and Winter option one must assume that the setting applies to Midsummer or Midwinter days.

Thanks for the explanations so far.

I once raised temps to something like 46 on a desert map (not inconceivable after all) and my engine kept on overheating, no matter what I did, even when reved down to 50% throttle ... took me a while to figure it out too ... ha ha. Never tried minus temps though. Sounds fun.

Another thing I've noticed is the curvature of the earth, which begins to be noticeable at altitudes as low as 3000m. Now I've not had much experience flying, but I did see that in a commercial plane, even at 11 000m, there is virtually not curvature of the earth's horizon visible.

Is there a way to correct this in Il-2? It's one of the reasons why I never like to fly high, as it appears to be a bit too odd.

... useful for getting rid of snow on default desert online map , among other things :wink:
