Bandit at 6 oclock!

Can the artificial intelligence be made to call out bandits? Now unless I see the bandit myself, I only know theve been spotted when the AI peel off after him. Since the AI have pretty good situational awareness, why cant they give me a heads up on targets on my tail. Or is there a mod that already does this?

The AIs already do this but only once you have been targeted by an enemy AI and it's on its attack run. Also, If you have radio chatter turned off in your conf.ini, you won't get the warnings.

I have run into it myself on numerous occasions. The AI will warn me AFTER I've been fired on and have sustained damage. It sucks.

Some AIs are better than others. I think it has to do with the skill level. If you have a wingman that is on the rookie level, you may not get a warning until it is too late. Conversely, if your wingman is on the ACE level, you may get the warning early enough to do something about it.

It may also be the case that you don't get a warning if your wingman is already invovled in a dogfight of his own or has already been shot down. I have found that only my immediate wingman will warn. If you are number two, your flight lead will not warn you. If you are number one and you lose your wingman, number 3 may or may not warn. Usually they don't.

Ok that means that the AI are paying attention (at some level). What Ive noticed is that if I am lead, the second element will pursue a bandit but will not tell me anything, can this be moded so that even if they cant call out a cardinal position, they could at least say "bandit spotted".

Also, I dont see why it takes an Ace level wingman to give a bandit call. Theoretically if ace ai can do then all ai should be able to. I mean I dont think a pilot could get out of flight school with out being able to speak up when his wingie is under threat.

Has anyone done any work with the comms speech triggers in this game? Since the AI are all seeing perhaps they could help up out a little? A mod that gets the ai to call bandits would help a lot in single player and coop. Now if they could call bandits and bogies even better. Now in the old Janes F-18 ai wingmen could also report their relative position, that would be way cool in IL2. Here I'd settle for an order for me to Break -- "lead break or Number 3-4 break" when ai sees me under attack.

Frequently the first pilot to shout "Bandits spotted" was also the pilot with the best eyesight...coincidentally all the best combat pilots had really good eyesight (greater then 20/20 vision). Spotting the enemy first allowed one to get into the best position for attack...

p.s. You are right (as my understanding goes) that if one pilot can voice the approaching of "bandits" that all AI pilots should be able to proclaim the same information regardless of "AI" skill...

Good eyesight means something might be spotted at a longer distance. Its situational awareness that allows a pilot to notice something in the first place, because he knows he should look for it. Good eyesight is useless if you're transfixed on whats ahead, or the readings on your instrument panel.

However, it would be nice if one member of the flight said "Bandits at 'x' o'clock" instead of simply leaving you to fly on alone without a care in the world.

You know what I would like to see is a mod that assigns call signs to different units. This was done in real life, yes, even during WW2. Each unit would be given a call sign, then it would come over the air when radio calls were made. That way, at least, you knew whether you could ignore some of those radio calls.

For instance, playing campaigns, you get A LOT of radio chatter. It would be nice to hear, "Chevy 22, Bandits at 4 o'clock", and you belong to Dodge flight or Eagle. Chevy flight would be a bunch of P-51s operating in a different part of the map and you could ignore them until on of your flight calls out a warning. It would also be nice to have Chevy call in when you yell for help from "base" and they vector fighters to you. Chevy calls in and says, "Dodge flight, we have you in sight sight, engaging enemy."

Unfortunately, it would require MASSIVE modding and .wav files.

Ya...But I don't think we need to take this down the "whats more important" route...I was just pointing out the fact that linking the distance at which the "AI" announces the intrusion of the enemy to "AI skill" level is not without a historical precedence. ...of course the fundamentals of "situational awareness" can be taught to a pilot of any experience while the quality of ones eyesight are given at birth.

But when they peel off to fight a bandit they should let the lead know!

That's not situational awareness or eyesight. They see the bandit, they are reacting.
They should report such to the leader of the group.
