[Mod Request] B-26
#1

I know there are a lot of bombers in il2 but how come there are no B-26s?

Can someone add on to the game?

Post moved to correct forum section. Please don't use the WIP section for posting requests.

To answer your request however, RAF_Leigh has been putting in some serious hours on the model over the last while... I haven't seen any updates myself recently, but I believe its getting close to being sent off to a skinner... Dunno. This RAF project, I'll leave to him to update you's Tongue

It's interesting to me why people have this regard for the B-26. It certainly didn't impress the people who flew it, and although a capable warplane it was widely recognised even at the time that the A20 was better. As I've mentioned in another post, there was a major enquiry to decide whether the Marauder would stay in production at one point and production was nearly halted four times. Not all were sent into combat either - the US retained some as target towers - surely an indication of the airframes importance in the great scale of things.

Nonetheless, I keep seeing people eulogise the B26. I remain curious as to why. Don't get me wrong - I'd be happy to see it in IL2 as well, it is an aeroplane used around the world (albeit in diluted quantities) during ww2.

Is it the appearance? The name 'widowmaker'? Or is it just urban legend?

The aircraft was named "Widowmaker" due primarily (I believe) to a combination of it's high landing speed, and overall relatively high accident rate. I'm at work at the moment, so I'm kinda shooting from the hip....
#10

It was called the "widow maker" because of the high number of training accidents. It also had the lowest loss rate of any U.S. bomber.
#11

Yes, I read an article about it on Flight Journal about a flying istructor who trained B-26 pilots and the losses were terrible in training, specially in take offs. It was a very dangerous plane to fly....

However cant wait to shot it dow... ejem ejem...fly it!

It had the lowest attrition rate of any US bomber for one thing. The challenge of flying a well FM'd kite would be a joy for me too IMHO. Little stall shudder from what I understand, which made you have to run it faster than you might other ships. As they said in Discovery Channel's WINGS episode on the B-26, (paraphrased,) this just was no buggy, this was a hot-rod Big Grin .

I'm not trying to start any discussion here on the subject, I'm just happy enough someone's working toward it's completion. {BTW: thanks for the news Magpie- HUZZAH for RAF_Leigh 8) } But those are the two big attractions for me, as well as they fill a significant historical role in a number of theatres. Their use in historical scenarios would be numerous.

Cheers

The b26 "Marauder" Was nicknamed the 'WidowMaker' due to a large number of crashes it has made during flight training.
#14

On the other hand it had one of the best combat service records of any medium bomber ever.
#15

Ok, but is that down to averages? After all, although it was used in every theatre there were never many of them.
