How hard would it be to model tanks?
#1

I was playing Theater of War today and it got me thinking. How hard would it be to model armor in this sim? ToW is based on the IL2 engine! Maybe we could take maps or he higher detailed armor models from ToW and import them into IL2.

I know that driving a panther or a tiger or a t-34\85 would be awsome!

Imagine the online play with armored units moving in to take a town and calling in stuka support for guns on a ridge or B-25's to take out enemy armor and guns in a town!

With whats been done thus far nothing seems to be impossable anymore!

That would be sweet indeed!

Or what about the ability to man airfield AAA guns of various calibers, from meagre rifle caliber MGs up to the likes of a Flak 18 88mm gun! That would definitely teach online vulchers a little more respect...

Yeah but first we need mor detailed tank models.

You should realize that close air support in WWII was nothing like it is today....

It would be rather frustrating being a grunt and relying solely on CAS.

manning a tank or AAA

who cares about all the extra planes when a flight sim can be turned into a Whole WWII fight sim, tanks, planes, 400 hitler youth wth panzerfausts and just about everything else
if this is possible i will help any way i can, though i only have some texture modding experience, i sure will be happy to spend like 1hr a day and 3 on weekends to help in any way i can!

Michael Wittmann SS-Panzerkorps heavy tank commander reporting for duty!

time for a true combat sim, not just a tank, or plane, or fps, but all in one!

it will be difficult to make foot infantry, but good luck...

Personally, I would like this to just stay a flight sim. I do care about all of the extra planes and would like to fly them.
And turning it into a full combat sim would take forever. Might as well wait for Storm of War to come out. (I hear Oleg will make it much easier to mod)

But for now I'm going stick to Arma for a full combat sim.

What I would like to see is manning the AAA guns though.
If anyone could figure out how to do this

and combine it with the AAA could make an awesome mod.

i guess it would take forever but at least getting driven tanks an AAA i do not thing it is too hard as all we need is an arrow keys and mouse to aim configuration. like flaps could be w And s on a drive, an aierlions be like turn left right. i think it would be quite possible without to much effort, just give the bottom some 3d look and the top could be aimed via floating sites, same wth AAA, just have a sight above the flak gun which aims it at the poor, and otherwise dead enemy. also it would be nice to give inf ammo on AAA server an watch vulchers an campers get what they deserve "a shell in the face, an burning fuel on er skin!!"

yeah, adding AAA and tanks is probably possible and would add a lot more options to missions both offline and online.

Imagine, an online dogfight mission where one side has to stop the other's tank unit from reaching their airbase and shooting up all of the planes.

Or, manning flak guns to take out waves of bombers before they reach a city.

It is definitely something worth purseing. Big Grin

And like I said Theater of War is based on the IL2 Engine so there is where we can find models for tanks and infantrie!

Although this oe is russian the German's did run test to try gliding tank's. Every thing went perfectly except 1 crucial part. Landing, The glider had no engine and only weight a couple of ton's but the real problem is that there are no wheels on a tank. So it;s a really rough landing so they dropped the idea.
It would be to expensive and risk to be done practically. But imagine....

This has always been a favorite idea of mine, before even the possibility of an AAA mod for it.

By the video, in it's crude form, it certainly would look possible. This was one of the first 'hacking' videos that ever came out IIRC..

I'd certainly like to see at least two classes of vehicles modded into the game.

The basic jeep/truck/halftrack - nothing fancy .. something suitable for bombing around with on a map, or playing a 'Get the Desert Fox' type scenario online for example. Perhaps even a fuel truck or two for someone to screw around with at the local base airport to 'refuel' landing aircraft for the sake of airport activity, or to have fun dodging the opposing team vultures with Big Grin

I'd also like to see the AA weaponry made active. Active, player controlled guns on the field, or even situated in a point of concentration where the enemy is known to pass by, on the way to attack friendly targets or bases would certainly make things interesting for the opposition and be fun to boot Smile

I don't know if there is a need for 'foot soldiers' really.. jmho.

Tanks? That might need to be taken to the next level .. basically i'd think that you'd need to 'model' a
T34 or Tiger or whatever, as an aircraft. Assign it a max speed of 25 km/h, the aerodynamic characteristics of a brick and go from there.. the 'stations' like driver, gunner etc would be switcheable like an aircraft.

I would be happy with the ability to control a stationary 88mm Flak with wonderwoman sighting view, or a truck with switcheable driver position and an Antiaircraft gun on the bed with wonderwoman sighting view, or ability to control the aforementioned fuel truck.. but that's just me.

i completely agree, maybee the 20 or so ppl wth ak47 is a bit much, but it has been done on youtube, so someone already know how, now who wants to volounteer to knock on his door wth a K98 in hand?

if we could get the info on how from er ppl, then our job only be skins, and the adition of guns onto er Waffen SS troops. i think a tank is not to hrd, get the right 3d model, left aileron = turn left, r aileron = right, throttle could be forward/back, or if W and S could i'd love it but planes use er controlls for up/dwn. anyway, i love ya idea on runnin round in a fuel truck as 20 planes straffe ya, be fun, like the indiana jones classic where the kubelwagen is goin full speed, with bullets hittin right behind it, i love ya idea!!
Plan:
1 fly round
2 watch trucks drag race
3 bomb trucks
4 watch ppl running in panik away from burnin wreckage
5 strafe people
6 nuke all thats left
7 go home, have a beer, an watch football
