City Mod....?
#1

I don't know if anyone would like to take this up but...

At the moment the number of objects needed to populate a city so that it looks good at low level reduces the FRPS to almost zero Cry . So here is an idea. :o Would it be possible to create a single object (with far less polys that an aircraft) to mimic a whole block or street or village - or more. Basically nothing more than a ground plane with a collection of different size boxes stuck on to it. The skin would comprise a collection of street textures, house fronts and roofs. 1024 x 1024 would be adequate to provide a variety of buildings. One object with one skin - complete with a damage model as for a single object. If a range of these could be produced it would make poulating large towns and citys very fast and game friendly.

Food for thought.. anyone else have any thoughts on this. It could be a quick win (plus loads of fan mail...) for one of the more gifted and talented within the community  .

Hi.

I think it could become a problem to create missions containing these "city-files",
as no ground vehicle will drive through an object. So if the streets within were a part of the file,
for example no car could drive on them.

But i don't know if i'm right at that point.
It's only a suggestion.

greets,

If the blocks were positioned around existing streets, without overlapping them or the vehicle tracks laid so as to pass between blocks, it would work. But this is not a huge problem. The major idea is to avoid the problem of the drop in FRPS. It will add significantly to the realism of the game. This idea could also be used to provide additional airfield scenery as well as ports/docks/railway sidings and stations. The range of possibilities could be quite considerable.

However I doubt if ithis idea will see the light of day as I am not able to do the modelling even though it would be so very easy for someone with the right software Cry , although I would be more than happy to work with that someone to make all the necessary skins  .

Please PM me if you want to take this on

I had this idea months ago. See my 'Channel Map' thread - the pics of Southampton and Paris show it. One texture, a model with many buildings on it.

I'll be releasing lots with my Channel map. I can have massively poplulated cities with almost no FPS loss.

... what about destruction ? ... one small bomb would destroy whole city block ?

The trick is not too try and cover too large an area with one object, and also to have the correct 'panzer' settings in the static.ini.

Still, there's an element of compromise, and the benefit (and I think it's worth it) is dense cities with minimal FPS impact.

agreed , i was just curious ...

i could live with not so accurate destruction "effect" while getting boosted FPS just fine

excellent idea guys this will make flying over cities much more immersive, at the moment even newer computers recieve frame rate penalties when flying over large cities like berlin(and by the way canon that channel map is excellent!)
