Would it be possible to create an object that releases coloured smoke to mimic a ground target being illuminated by ground forces or artillery?

I'm sure I seen this beeing done in the movie 'A bridge too far' when hidden German artillery in a wood was illuminated by purple smoke for the RAF to blow the crap out of them.

Excellent idea Sandbag, seems it would be do-able to add more smoke choices to stationary objects in 1 or more bright colors.
