the CA-15's maximum speed is 721 km/h. The reported 803km/h was achieved by Flt Lt J. A. L. Archer on May 25, 1948, when he hit a speed of 502.2 mph (803 km/h) over Melbourne, in a shallow dive of 4,000 ft (1,200 m).

You are right somewhat. The production Bearcat's maximum speed was about 750 km/h. The plane you are talking about (Rare Bear, a race plane at Reno Air Racing) was a a highly-modified F8F owned by Lyle Shelton. It replaced the R-2800 engine with a R-3350, and of course, no ammunition :lol: But you are right, this is the fastest any piston-powered aircraft has flown.



The fastest stock, production aircraft (as far as I know) is the Supermarine Spiteful F Mk.XVI, which had a maximum speed of 795 km/h. This aircraft also used a griffon engine, and a 5-bladed propeller.
