Why does the Il2 modding Community not use JSGME?

Some of you guys who also play Silent Hunter might know this programe already. For those of you who do not know it: it is a generic mod switcher which allows you to activate and deactivate mods with just a push of a button.

The proprietary Mod switcher of the UI mod switches between Game Versions using DOS Batch files to copy and override the necessary files.

JSGME does the same with every MOD you throw at it, but it also keeps track of the changes and allows a quick rollback.

Why do so many of you wait for someone else to put up a new switcher to download from the internet???

The switcher is already there with JSGME.

You only need to know which files are needed for your mod. Put them in a folder and activate (i.e copy them in the main directory) with JSGME.

"SAPERE AUDE!" You do not need to wait for somebody else to write a switcher to conviniently enjoy the different mods and versions of il2.

I think it would be agood idea to get rid of these proprietary switches and put up JSGME compatibility as a standart for mods just like the Silent Hunter Community did with great success.

I prefer manual.

I like to see what happens. We'd still be in the 1780s if I were in charge.

I prefer manual too. But JSGME makes "manual" easier. :wink:

I want the people who hasitade to do the step up from 4.08 or 4.09b to 4.09 final too look at the files and get going.

Why are we still seeing those 4.08 servers on Hyperlobby?

Because people are afraid of messing up their installation or they believe they have to reinstall Windows to upgrade and so on.

I can only give my impression of 4.08 servers on HL.....some people will only deal with upgrades issued from the official manufacturer. I guess they are afraid of trojan horses, messing up their installs, etc., etc. I sort of understand them....it is a leap of faith to go to a modded game. But the leap is well worth it.

if something went wrong ... among installing issues at least i don't have to wonder if third party application messed something up too .... less variables, quicker result/fix :wink:

I have used JSGME and found it to be very slow. If you shutdown your system with some mods enabled it is then impossible to disable them again.

The switcher in UI is the easiest way to switch versions for online play - it takes seconds rather than the minutes that JSGME takes.

I use JSGME with UP 1.7, Silent hunter, and used to use it before UI came out. I was thinking about using it for my UI install to switch back and forth to 409 final.

I tend to only use mods I want... so there is no need to enable disable them.. although I can see something like that for Zutis DF mod.. The other night I tried to get into a 4.09b1 modded server and found I couldn't.. (The 99th runs 4.09b1 modded till we get a way to run with mods and full functionality across the board in 4.09) because Zutis mod sets your install up as a different version..

I've only ever encountered problems with JSGME.. don't like it one bit.. also, I like to have everything installed manualy for the reasons already described above.
I only ever fly online with the modded game now, just can't bring myself to fly 'vanilla' as it appears and sounds totaly dated and yes, I'm spoilt now because of the mods..lol!
Online modded games are generaly not a problem if you take the time to find out what mods are needed for that particular server or war.
The days are long gone when you can get by with just one install, time and the game have moved on (for the better) and most dedicated IL2'ers now have two or more versions installed.

Manual installs are much better. It pays to get to know how your game works. Many mods like new aircraft or ships etc. require you to add lines of text to existing files - not overwrite them.
JSGME is unable to help with these tasks and can get you into a real mess.

of course JSGME does not help you editing files, but it makes it possible to use multiple versions of a file with the same filename but different content for switching.

My point is not JSGME vs manual modding, but JSGME + manual modding vs prefabricated switchers which keep people from understanding how switching or manual modding is done.

f.g. if you want to use the sas4.09 mod activator for premodded il2 versions, you have to do manual editing of files to put up your own specific 4.09 modded version. If you want to switch between your specific sas 4.09 modded version and the other modded and unmodded versions of the game, this cannot be accomplished at the moment by the way the UI 1.1 switcers work.

JSGME easily replaces the files when the SAS mod is activated with the SAS version of f.g static.ini or air.ini and puts back the file it replaced when you deactivate it.

Thus you can run 4.08, 4.09b and 4.09 final modded/unmodded on the same IL2 installation and switch conviniently without manually backing up files and replacing them.

I have been using JSGME since the early days of soundmod 093 and have not messed up my installation by switching files withi JSGME in a way that I had to do a complete reinstall of il2. Of course you have to take care of what you do.
