WIP Panama Canal Zone Sceenshots
#1

Come and fly with the 6th Air Force and protect the Panama Canal Zone.

The Panama Canal map will soon be my first official release map.

The map consists of a navigable Canal Zone and another navigable river and lake system.

The map uses google earth and in game textures.

The map was made as The Canal Zone was stratigically important and it is a geographical significant region.

The map will have around 8 airfields which were used by the 6th Air Force.

Panama City, Colon and some smaller towns will be populated.

I used a combination of Kevin P's Tutorials and Clock Watchers Microdem Tutorial with the making of this map.

The main large lakes are at sea level. The rivers all gently flow down to sea level from mountain areas.
You can see water at different levels with no massive river canyons as some have experienced.

Things going on at the moment

tweeking textures
filling in the coastlines.
Will add some beaches although miles of mangrove mostly.
smoothing river levels some are very high up in the air as I see a light blue area in game when this occurs
7 airfields to go and a submarine base at Balboa.
tweeking load.ini and textures at the momment mostly green but that will change.
Thinking of objects suitable to make the actual Panama Canal (possibly some of Cannon's new objects, Hi Cannon)
Thinking of a causway object for the rail system that did not show up fromk the SRTM data bumber
Fortifications on surrounding islands 155 howitzers.

I need a pack of Gibbon monkeys to do all the coastline filling in time consuming work.

Check out this link below really good find

Photos are of the Canal Zone only. I'll update with more screens from other areas on the map.

Greetings!

Very good idea!
This map can be the ideal background for a mini-campaign... The Germans at one time planned to make a strike against the Panama Canal, if I'm not wrong. And the Japanese for sure were thinking about the same.... Lot of possibilities, IMHO.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers

It seems no one else knows that in real life it was the site of the 1929 fleet exercise which proved to be the turning point in carrier tactics, proving the worth of using carriers in a fast carrier strike force over using them as an attachment to a conventional fleet.

Thanks for all the opinions.

I researched the 6th Air Force and the building of the canal mainly for this map but yes what if missions could work well on this map.

The forts / airfields will all be established on the map.

I did not know about the carrier exercises Thanks F4U for that.

I read that the Japanese made a number of huge submercibal hanger subs I think called I-400 and they were built for the purpose of bombing the canal. They were going to attack from the Caribbean Sea.

Levelling rivers and coast line, tweeking textures.

Check out the first post.

There is some good reading about Japanese intel with the web link.

Have done 3 airfields so far. Using copy and paste method. I will also make a few of my own.

Sourcing place names from Wikpidea and the Japanese intel.

Any comments welcome.
