WIP: New Arctic area map from Mixx_
#16

mandrill7 Wrote:Lovely map. The only criticism I have is that the author is inconsistent re whether there is surf on the sea coast. On some stretches of coast, you have a strip of surf and then a strip of no surf and then surf again. If that could be corrected, the map would be amazing!

The same textures could be used for any sub arctic map - including Alaska, northern Canada, Finland or the Aleutians.
I think that Mixx, author of this map, will be pleased about comments of his map so far and i will post everybodys commnents to him anyways. For me this a very special map. I have been trekkin/fishing even diggin gold at the finnish side of the area. It looks gorgeous. I haven't test the airfields, but it seems that some of them need a bit working. They work allright but the spawn points are not excatly right. Quite easy to fix, i think.
When i first started to learn mapmaking, i did try to make almost excatly the same area than Mixx. Now we have it and does it look good!

Don't say anything else. These maps puts my attemps in shame. I possible can't add anything new anymore.
Err... perhaps i can edit my old maps to look better with all these new textures and stuff. ..

C'mon Kapteeni, nothing wrong with your maps. You don't wanna know how many planes I 've downed already on your Archangelsk summer map.
Still like that map very much.
But one thing about this Arctic map: I tried the included missions but can't get the I-16 mission to work, the map stops loading after about 5 or 10%.
I know you are not responsible for that but just to let you know.

BRILLIANT MAP! Great framerates even over cities. Textures are fabulous! Install was a snap following the instructions. Missions save on it so I didn't need the 3do files although I'm keeping them around for future reference.

I noticed that too but maybe...it could be the slope of the ocean floor. Long shallow slope, hardly any surf. Short steep slope, bigger surf. At least that would work as an explanation for me.
Considering that is (so far) the only glitch I've seen, I can live with it.

So kapteeni, when YOU are not making brilliant maps you're finding other brilliant maps to bring to us. Um, hello? Can we nominate kapteeni for Sainthood?
Thanks kap for finding this map and letting us in on it. Has this person made any other maps? They seem quite adept at map making.

What Lejo and cgagan said. You know I think you are one of the very best map makers in the community. The only reason you should stop is because you just aren't into it anymore. Your maps have the fewest errors overall, always depict an interesting area and show such a degree of care and expertise that few can match you. At least that's my 2 kopecks on the matter.

Please don't stop! It would be a major, major loss to the community.

By the way would be good i think to desaturate -10% these textures, they will look more photorealistic.

The quality is allready very good, but just a little desaturation would improve all Wink.

I download it tomorrow

I was kinda jokin as u propably knew. map making is fun! But one thing that i'm missing, is campaigns and missions for all these new masterpieces. It is abit boring to make a huge map and then only 1 or 2 campaigns or missions are made Cry. That is why i might try my hands with Lowngrins DGC. I love those random missions!
BTW! I couldn't help my self. I just took some Mbug's wintertextures and made a early winter version for this map. MY ol MY it looks sooo real:

If you want to try it, it is easy:
1. Make a copy of original load.ini and paste it into Zapolare folder
2. rename it to Load_we ( e means early, no ice, but also no winter camo Sad)
Add these lines to all.ini file:
mixx_Zapolar_we mixx_Zapolar/load_we.ini
Copy/paste these lines in to that new winter load_we.ini file. Remember to replace all with this:

This is indeed such a lovely map that I almost feel like foregoing map-making, since it would be difficult to do better.

But that aside, to promote the map a bit, I've posted a link here to 4 missions I made for myself for this map, but which might be of use to members who aren't that conversant with mission making in FMB or have no patience for it.

These missions are with large numbers of aircraft on both sides (30-60 in total), usually involve the pilot being tasked with intercepting a bombing raid and have no long flight times until contact with the enemy. The enemy aircraft will be within range almost as soon as the mission starts. So there is lots of action from the get go.

There is nothing historical about them as such, just some fast-paced missions on a great map with beautiful landscape. Don't get distracted by the views and sights along the way ...

I made a set of -10% desaturated textures for the map and just tried them out. Didn't have time for screenshots, but I'd say that the desats loose too much of their green color, so that overall the terrain tends to look very rocky and gray, as if the whole area is virtually nothing but outcroppings of rock ...

Of course, with these things you have to take the peculiarities of your own monitor into account. It may be that my screen already tends towards the less dramatic color difference ... and by desaturating the textures my screen gives a much too flat and colorless color ...

So I'll stick with the original textures as they are.

BUT - I did learn what desaturation is for and how it might be useful for future work. So it was a useful exercise.

And what I'd really like to learn is how to add a touch of brown to existing textures, or how to turn green colors in a texture into brown colors - more or less. That might be fun for getting an autumn landscape.
