P51 Photorealistic metal
#16

Yes!!! I've been waiting for someone to do this for ages. I even started a thread on it some time ago asking if it were possible, because I saw it on the Sabre and it looked so terrific. Couldn't see why it couldn't be done for the Mustang, and who knows...maybe the Jug sometime down the line. Realy nice work. Please get that template out to the talented bunch of skinners we have. I will clear out all other skins from my Mustang folders once these start coming out.
Once again, looks great. Was really needed.

Hi there. A little over a year ago Shooter Casey and myself were having a conflab over skinning the Mustang .
Darren had done what I believe was the best template ever released.
I had a project in the works "The Bodney Bastards" and was looking for a way to pair down the template as Darren's mind operates at highspeed.
What we had was a template that did'nt resemble a book, it resembled a volume of work. What I thought would take several weeks took several months.
My partner Casey an I worked on three different template versions perhaps more, sending run throughs back and forth to Darren and each other until we felt we had what we were looking for. At that time Avalas Plainshine also played a big part when it came to working the shadows and light fixes.
The one thing I would suggest is that you make sure that all revits are removed from the laminar wing as the wing was clean as a whistle. When Ranwers saw the the Bodney pack that was his first comment. He was quite happy .
Lastly, the the panel lines around the front cowl were all different shades of duralluminum.Look for photos. There are lots, and you will see that from the exhaust panel down to the forward wing root there are subtle differences. Here are several grabs . Good luck on your Mustang
Cheers RDDR

One last thing Rock.
I forgot to mention that when a P51 came off the assemply line ,it was moved to an area where the wings were first sanded.
After that an application of light green primer paint was sprayed over it.
When that was done it was again sanded with a lighter grade, then it got a final two coats spray of silver paint,so what you see really is a duller
looking silver that the exposed clean metal Fuselage.
Dont be fooled by these beautifully restored Mustangs. In many cases they have been electricoated and buffed up with wax.
In the theatre these birds did not look like that.
Here is a pic of a no fillet D. I'm sure you've seen it before.
This pic says it all when it comes to doing the forward panels and cockpit area which is just as important as tackling the wings
Love this pic.
Sorry about the huge resolution.. Big Grin
Cheers,RDDR

Notice all the different shades of grey and silver in the aluminum finish. That looks as though it would be hard to replicate! It would make a skin look so real, though.

That's because different grades, batches, and types of metal were used...

This is a template I made a while ago trying to do the same thing RDDR mentioned. I wanted to give all the major panels a little different shade to reflect the different manufacturing techniques like DEAC also mentioned. I had rivets on the wings, but after reading what RDDR wrote, I went back and removed them and tried this out. These pics were done WITH Avalas planeshine so be warned. I don't know if it looks ok or not. I'm always very critical of my work. I believe others are far better than me in doing this sort of stuff.

I always hesitate to critique some of this work, because I don't know a thing about how to do it myself.
You seem to be on the right track with those various shades of aluminum. The only problem I have with it, is how pronounced the rivets are. It's something I see on a lot of skins. Kind of like the old Revell plastic model kits.
Look at the Mustang photo on the previous page, and you'll see that even up that close, the rivets don't jump out at you all that much.
Tone those down, I think. Just a suggestion.

Yes, I say this too. It should be viewed as rivets on the surface of the airplane.
