[Reqeust/Question] 1 1/2 wing flying?
#1

What i mean is, is there a mod out there where if you loose a small part of your wing tip and loose alieron on that wing, you can use the one on the other wing, i know P-51's had that feature cuz my Grandfather who was actually in the war saw a P-51 with about 13 % of its right wing cut off land, course it flipped out on landing but the pilot was relativly uninjured, nuff bout that, but is there a mod like that anywhere, if not (WARNING REQEUST PART) can someone make it, that it, seeya.

I suppose it is possible, of course it is, but how Historically accurate would it be? Is there much data on this sorta thing happening?

in addition, I've read of many occasions where a plane lost as much as a few feet of its wing and returned to base. I doubt it counts, but I have also landed an RC plane when the skin tore off the last 6" or so of a 3 foot (6' wingspan) wing.

I think the reason the game doesn't simulate this, is because of limitations in the game engine, and that, in many planes, the wing is either on, or has lost at least 1/3 of it, which in most planes, is enough to bring upon an uncontrolled spin.

i heard of an F-15 losing a whole wing being able to return from a mission and land safely. is that possible?

Yeas that is true. It was an Israeli pilot. He collided with an A-4 during a training mission.

The Skyhawk didn't make it home, but the pilot got out.

Yes, it happened to an Israeli F15, and the makers sent a team out to find out how on earth the pilot got home safe and sound. In general, this sort of thing is usuallly disastrous.

In order to survive, the aeroplane needs to retain functioning controls, especially since it will be flying out of balance. Further, the loss of structure should not cause a catastrophic loss of control or sudden change in attitude, or the situation is probably unrecoverable. It would also demand a degree of skill and a cool head from the pilot.

Yes, it's historically possible, probably everyone (or almost everyone Big Grin) have heard a story about F-15 which safely returned home without a wing. But do things like that took place in WWII?

The answer is YES, here's a proof of that, TBF Avenger deprived of large wing part is caught on photo flying low over ocean - notice how pilot handle plane's stick to keep aircraft on course (im curious how hard was that, without all those fly-by-wire systems :?Smile:

BTW: Im thinking, do such a stuff can be modelled in-game?

In the course of dangerous missions over pixel occupied territory, I've had planes damaged as everyone else. On rare occaisions there's been significant damage and by some fluke, the aeroplane is still under marginal control. Inevitably though as the flight conditions change, the aeroplane gets away from me and it's wiser to bale out. That's quite realistic.

Even if a pilot retains a measure of control at a given airspeed, a change of condition will alter the balance. Even speeding up or slowing down can be catastrophic, let alone any attempt at manoevering. This brings up a major problem. Assuming an aeroplane is still flying with this sort of damage, as the pilot descends to land (or something similar) he's running out of options, because at some point he will be too low to bale out and if he slows down to the point where his remaining control is ineffective, he's got little chance of survival, and attempting to alight at higher speeds brings an obvious hazard to safe conduct of the flight.

Enough speed and everything is possible.
