I use Vista 64, so far I had no problems with IL-2, but I had CTD's with other games, specially older ones, you can always google like "BF1942 on vista" and you will always find other reports and fixes, but you won't be able to fix every single problem, some have solutions, others don't, yet.
I have 2GB RAM, it worked fine on XP, but on Vista, looks like I need another gig...
I recommended WinXP SP3 32 or 64 bit, Win 2003 Server 32 or 64 bit (if you have money for it), it will be best selection in this time. I think need year or two before vista will be work normal.
THX for the replays lads, i'm just want to use vista cause i want to try DX10, i will give it a try i have 2gb and 2 more comming on next week, i will tell you later how it's goes.

vista is less stable than xp and more of a resource hog as well. i use 9800gx2 and DX10 in games like crysis is beautiful, the best graphics you will see, thats the only reason i use vista 64-bit. apart from DX10, XP is better al round
I use Vista Home Prenium on my PC with Vista, GeForce 7300 with 2 Gig RAM, i run IL2 on excellent settings with Direct X Driver at 1400 * 1050 screen resolution, I still have excellent Frame rates even with 100 Japanese Carrier Launched planes and british Hurricanes doing the Colombo Raid in 1942, use Vista, but Put IL2 not in the program files but in a special folder direct on the C Drive, you will have to double click the shortcut each time to run because Vista will not allow you to run direct of the CD if the program is not on program files, but trust me, it is worth it, However, get at least 3-4 Gig Ram (to be on the safe side as well to ensure your PC can run the latest games for a long time to come
Good Luck
