How-To Concerning Sound Mods
#1

Hey there, peeps!

I've been PM'ing around for help, but I need some more help.
For those of you who have the sound mod demonstrated in the Airshow video, I need some assistance.

The readme tells me to find presets and sample folders in the Files folder. The two things in my Files folder are: 3do and GUI. Of course, none of them have anything to do with sounds. So, where do I find the folders he wants me to find if I don't even have them?

I have no idea how to distinguish a preset from a sample. The instructions seem very vague to me.

In the root folder I have a file on it's own called samples. In samples I have Music, Sounds, and Speech. The only things in Sounds are different kinds of sirens and background noise. The other folders are self-explanatory.

Where should the engine sounds be, then?

Please walk me through the installation process, try to be as detailed in your instructions as possible- even if it seems like common sense, go ahead and type it anyway.

Thank you very much for your time!

What kind of install do you have....... did you use just the mod installer which didn't give the new sounds or is it the new UI....??

There used to be a Files folder which was in the il2 Root folder.... it was put there with the early system of the mods....which also had a Filelist file which pointed the game to look in the Files folder for all items in its list (anything else it would go to the default sfs files)
this was used by the early soundmod .80 .85 .90
then a new Wrapper system came out which created the MODS folder and had a new Wrapper file in the root folder...this directed the game to look in the MODS folder first ...then in the Files folder...then in the sfs files ...and it no longer need a Filelist file
many of us thought we could put the File folder into the MODS folder to simplify matters.... and we often found that by renaming it zfiles or something similar it would be read last alphabetically and so any new a/c mods put in the MODS folder above it wouldn't get their wires crossed...
Then it was discovered that the new installers being used by AAA would automatically look in the old Files folder and check for duplicates and puit things in the right order...and also the uninstaller

so those of us who moved the Files folder into our MODS folder were advised to put it back

You should only have one ...with the 3do/gui/i18/presets/samples folders in it

if there is no Files folder in your root which has the presets and sounds folders...then look in your MODS folder...which may have it named as zfiles or something similar

Hey there, Fred!

I have only the mod installer - no new sounds or anything fancy. Just the planes. I do have a MODS folder, but it's only planes, and and STD file for properties of the game.

You know what's weird, though? My STD file has 3do, GUI, com, and i18. Still no samples or presets. Therefore my Files folder and my STD file both have a 3do and GUI.

Hope this makes it easier to diagnose! Thanks a bunch for helping out!

*Edit* Well, I figured out the difference between presets and samples. It's all in the file type. So I decided to make new folders where he said they should go - a Presets folder and a Samples folder under Files. Needless to say it didn't work.

Continued assistance is greatly appreciated.

YOU ONLY HAVE the Mod installer.....you cannot have modded sounds because you didn't install the Sound mod
try installing the soundmod 9.3

The deepest thanks to you, Fred!

I did what you said, then everything made sense! The engine sounds are lovely... now I shall go and tweak the volumes a bit as recommended (damn that whiny Bf-109  ).

BTW, do you use a program called "Audacity", or something like that? I heard it's good for tweaking the volumes...

If you read the thread about that soundmod from the airshow video...I'm sure someone mentioned a setting which could be tweaked in the files somewhere
probably don't need to go as far as re-doing it in a music editor
