The "Jimmy" Doolittle Raid
#1

Good day,

It was 18 April, 1942 when sixteen B-25 bombers launched from carrier to make an attack on Imperial Japan.

About 1 year ago this month, the 8th Fighter Squadron Black Sheep hosted an online reenactment of the famous Doolittle Raid. Several Fallen Angels Squadron members and others participated. We had all 16 bomber positions filled and a few players took Japanese fighters in attempt to find us before we could strike.

The following images tell the story:

Thanks goes to the 8th Fighter Squadron for hosting this reenactment of the Doolittle Raid.

I appreciate the Fallen Angels Squadron ( my squad ) for having great skill with IL-2 and making lots of fun for us.

Our associated squadrons are very special, too, and much appreciated.

Special thanks to 8FS_Bulau (78thFG_Bulau) for his hard work, creativity, and organizing skills in making this a memorable historical mission.

Mission was used with HSFX mod pack for IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 combat flight simulation. I flew the mission in DirectX and edited the track in OpenGL. Screenshots were made with FRAPS and editing done with Photobucket editing tools. My computer was an HP Pavilion notebook PC with an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7150M graphics card.

I hope that you enjoyed my thread.

Hi, Gumby

It was a map of Japan that had a bunch of objects custom added to it. It was a map used for this online event for live play.

...and yes - it was very fun. Big Grin

This is in the map cycle running on the 78thFG_Server on Hyperlobby now, but it's one of about 22-ish missions, so a crap shoot as to when it might come up. You can read the full briefing here:

I have only a server (dogfight) version of it, no single player. There was a coop version, way back before mods existed, but I'm not sure if I still have it. It was significantly enlarged and improved for the event that Fireskull participated in.

Hi, Planemad

This took 2 - 3 hours total in studio work.

It was originally made for the 8th Fighter Squadron (Now 78th Fighter Group) and Fallen Angles Squadron website and their appreciation, so the quality is good but not intended to be perfect or exactly historical.

I had almost as much fun in creating the screenshot set as I did in flying the mission.

Hi, Bulau

Guys, Bulau has been very patient with my learning curve.

He actually is far more skilled than I in many areas but his interests and time take him elsewhere sometimes.

Bulau is one of the guys who has helped me the most over the last couple years with technical knowledge.

Thank you, Bulau, for your help, kindness, and humble hard work! Big Grin

My work in the studio has not allowed much time with IL-2 lately, but soon we may meet or join in the air once again.

Guys, Bulau is the person who really put the wonderful online IL-2 mission into being.

Thanks,

The image of the B-25 that dropped the bombs at the entrance to the harbor warehouse is me flying, Fallen Angels Squadron members dropping nearby.

I actually intended to skip the bombs along the warehouse floor but the doorway was only a texture and not an opening, much to my surprise Confusedhock:
