Compans Wrote:Not seen the posts in question Cannon, but I like the maxim 'a rising tide floats all ships'. The tide, in this case is the very recent modding community which has revolutionised this game. Petty competitiveness is pointless but healthy competition can only be good for us all. As a skinner and campaign maker I'm always thinking 'how can I do something new?'. But ultimately, like yourself I'm thinking 'what do I want to see?'. My voicepacks came from having to listen to the same, rather bland ones for a long time. Some people liked my new ones, some not. Similarly, I always wanted to fly over an organic-looking European city. As I'm not an island, I know there will be others who feel the same way. Some won't like it. It's ok to polarise and this pushes the 'opposition' into a stronger stance also. I'm sure the other Channel map will be just great, though one doesn't negate the other. As all of this is freeware it's a little ridiculous to look gift horses in the mouth.
+1, well said Compans

Indeed.
I'd even go as far as saying the two maps will be complimentary. The two pretty radically different approaches to making the maps as accurate as possible makes it very hard to compair them : They both represent the same part of the world, but with different types of missions and time periods in mind, and I am sure campaign makers will be more than happy to have two equally outstanding maps to choose from to better suit their needs.
We shouldn't be debating about which one's the best, we should be jumping around like crazy with joy that we're not only getting ONE much hoped for and brilliantly designed Channel map, but TWO.
Cheers

Thanks R1
Means a lot to hear from you that you like the hangars - you're famous for your Hangar mods, and they've still got a place in my map
By the way, did you get my email with another attempt at enlarging the netting object?
a respectfull and heartfelt ''thank-you'' Mr.Canon - Guest - 30.10.2008
words can not do justice for what you have accomplished in this astonishing peice of work for the benifit of il-2 fans around the world.
the talent you display here is second to none and i couldent begin to estimate the number of flight simmer's who appreciate and look forward to this ''map of map's''!!!
you have done us all a great service with your imaginative and flawless approach to representing an era in aviation history so accuratly and fully that we stand in ''awe'' disbelieveing what we see in front of us but then accepting that indeed, there before us is the personification of map makeing and a great joy to behold.
you have added immeasurable joy to the entire community and although''thank-you'' hardly seems adequate let me say your legacy will live on forever in the annels of flight sim history and this accomplishment of your's will be the benchmark for mapmaker's for all of time.
with the deepest respect and admiration,
pilotsden.

Looking good. Channel area well overdue in IL2.
One small suggestion. Most hangars of the type shown, usually have a small area of concrete in front of the doors rather than straight onto grass. I think this would be an enhancement to an otherwise excellent looking map.
We desperately need a Dornier 17. Is anyone building one?
- bigc208 - 30.10.2008
Keep it up man , can't wait to use this map. Anyone who has problems with the way you do YOUR map, can either not just use it or make their OWN map. Finnish this thing quick before diaper duties ground you!

Question - Will your mod package nclude any new aircraft that relate to the new map? Like the Spit 1a and Spit IIB, Fw 190A-1 -> A-3, and the Bf 109 F-4/B?
- canonuk - 30.10.2008
No. I'm not really making a 'mod package' - just the map and the new objects I've made for it.

Ahh - was your North Africa a mod pack?
- canonuk - 30.10.2008
Nope. My North Africa/MTO map is another map I'm working on. It's currently on pause though until I finish my Channel map.

Perhaps someone could re skin the white tagret marker thingy (object 174 I think) as it conforms to the ground surface. Two - three varieties of this object would be quite handy a concrete skinned one for out in front of hangers factories etc and perhaps mud or dry packed earth for farmyards etc.
Its a real emersion killer seeing a nice farm, barn and cottage etc surrounded by green grass. Most farmyards I've been to have a lot of mud or dry earth surrounding the barns etc.
Cheers
