Quote:3. The endless spiral climb... After the first pass the Bf 109 started climbing, climbing and climbing until I just got bored chasing it and dived to the ground. After a minute he followed me, but after I got on his tail (with scissors, I could outturn him!) the 109 started to claimb again...
I am by no mean an ace, but if i had been in the 109, that's exactly what i'd have done, provided that you were not in position to shoot, and it was certain we were in a one vs one combat. This is the best tactic and a historical one, with this planeset opposition. Now there is still the overheat issue, but with AI limited to 90 (rookie) up to 98 (ace) % of max performance, it should be a fair fight.
Quote:rollnloop, until 2 days ago i would have agreed 100% with that. Since i installed this mod - i watched an F4F-3 trying to turn in behind a Zero, and he was continually firing little short bursts at the Zero every time he thought he might hit! None of that incessant firing - it was great to see!!
This is really great news, i'm longing to get back home and test it !

The spiral climb is a well known 109 evasion tactic, it's documented in many accounts, so for me its pretty realistic.. infact last night when chasing one in my Hurri MkI, I lost energy and power and stalled out, seconds later, he's back on me again.. I extend and eventualy have to turn as its my only defensive action that will help, he can't make the turn and extends away, but as I went to dive and catch up to his tail, he pulls up again and goes into the spiral climb.. pretty realistic to me, both of us using our aircrafts strengths..

Tested yesterday on mission with 12xP-39 and 6xP-40 vs 16xKi43 and 12xBettys.
The P-40
mission is to shoot Betty's down, before AI-mod they always went high and dived down on the bombers but now they follow at the same level behind the bombers and get shot down and their all at Veteran level?
P-39
do quite good now against Ki43
, now 4 to 8 get back after the mission and they try to get more air under them, before they usually just dived close to the ground before this mod.
With no AI-mod the cobras where usually all shot down but not anymore
I did run the mission several times and noticed that the wingmen proctect better their lead now.
No collisions but aircraft seem to get pretty close to each other in battle.
And now there was no 8 ki43
hunting one cobra then before, they seem to hunt more seperate targets then before.
Nice mod and i also use the Carrier take off mod and haven't seen any problems yet with it.

Well I've just downloaded and insttalled it, so...
Test 1
Pacific Island map, A6M2 vs A6M2 (AI). We approached same height, head on, default pilot skill. To be honest, I didn't see a lot of difference. On reflection, the AI
might have been making smoother choices - I didn't see the erratic manoevers I'm used to, so this is a tentative pass
Test 2
Moscow map, Bf109G2 vs P40E M-105 (AI). It was my own fault, I hadn't checked the map. I blundered into enemy AA and attempted to leave the area before engaging the P40. The firing stopped so I turned about and huh? What the...! It felt like the P40 was really going for it. He got a good burst at me and sprayed the cockpit when he came up underneath. Eventually I got in behind and blew his tailplane off - he crashed when he tried to jink out of my sights. Then the AA started up again. Is that deliberate? Does the AA stop in the presence of friendly aeroplanes? If so, thats brilliant.

About AI doing head-on attacks. I remember Oleg once said that AI won't do head-on attacks below certain skill level. Set it on ACE and it will do head-ons.

Right now the maneuvers are based on relative energy states between the aircraft, they're not really aircraft specific. This is something that I intend to work on, at the very least grouping aircraft by type (BNZ, TnB, etc), if not specific to plane models, and having the pilots choose their maneuvers with an eye to the maneuvers historically used. Of course, BnZ type planes generally enter the fight with a higher relative energy state anyway, so the current implementation isn't totally flawed.
Off the top of my head, 190s and P47s at higher altitudes should be diving away when they get at a disadvantage, Spits and 109s should favour the spiraling climb when energy states are close, or at a small disadvantage. (Feel free to give me more ideas on these)
I wasn't kidding when I said this is very much a beta, but I wanted to put it out there to get some ideas/suggestions and make sure I didn't drastically break anything.

Wow, this mod is fantastic, thanks very much Certificate.
I downloaded it last night and tried a few different scenarios, the AI used a good variety of moves, to evade my guns, really great stuff.
I used to hate that constant rolling circle. Thanks again.

I had a question about that, does anyone know if headon bomber attacks were mainly done by the luftwaffe, or was it a widespread tactic?

I've read somewhere of at least one RAF squadron that employed the head on tactic during the Battle of Britain, against bomber formations, which although very effective in breaking up the formations, was soon dropped because of the incidents of RAF planes being lost in collisions.

Sure, I removed the yousendit link, and repaced it with mediafire.
