Textures are from Google Earth - I made 50+ in all, and am using I think 30 of them in this map. -viking

The royal navy fleet had the presence of a carrier but it was heavily damaged by the luftwaffe, who made a heavy punishment to many warships during this operation, sinking many of them.

Indeed - and won't it be exhilarating inflicting such a heavy punishment on a 1:1 map. BTW, This map also includes Scarpanto which was bombed and shelled by the Allies, and more or less all the area where the Luftwaffe shipping strikes took place-viking

I wanted to upload the beta at least on the anniversay of the invasion - but oh well.
Airfields, roads, and texturing are pretty much done - just need to populate the villages and cities. Here are a couple more screenshots - Around Rethymno, and a view to the airfield.
(note the altered texture by compans)

You can see the Rethymno penisula in the distance - still working on the fort

A couple more ... all around Rethymno

Yes, very realistic.

- kapteeni - 22.05.2009

That is almost photorealistic!

Well - the textures all started life as photos

Rethymno and Heraklion are pretty much done - Need to complete Chania itself and then small villages. Looks like I'll finally learn to use autopop

Circling over Heraklion - the city texture is the actual street grid of the old city.

A more complete view...

One more...

Maleme is complete - it is its own texture overlaid with clear plates...I am going to get rid of the river - I understand it was a dry bed when the battle took place. Gliders landed on either side of that bridge, which you can sort of see at the top of the frame.

- kapteeni - 27.05.2009

That looks awesome!!!

- mandrill7 - 27.05.2009

Is there any chance of getting a tutorial or some notes on how to make plates from Google Earth shots?

Sounds a great idea!

- viking4570 - 29.05.2009

So this is the last of the big cities - Chania harbor - again the texture is taken from the old city -I just need to run autopop on the small villages, then it will be ready - Maybe I'll be able to upload this beta by the anniversary of the British evacuation? -cheers - viking
