Hurray!

Presumably it's possible to fly beneath the Eiffel Tower?

Whilst the city buildings are a little generic, they're not that far off some of the Parisian townhouses:

Got to go to bed now, but tomorrow I'll post pics of my newest additions - Arc De Triomphe, Battersea Power Station and Gasworks, and Buckingham Palace.

Canonuk, you're doing a fine job !

One tip for your parisian buildings: tiles are (were) very rarely used in Paris, slates or zinc almost exlusively. Dominant color from above is (was) grey with blueish/greenish patches: Google maps shows it well.

Your current texture set would be just fine for Normandy and northern France (Lille, Abbeville...)

Just my two cents Wink

- MSDomino - 13.02.2009

Changai, living in Paris, I can not do anything more than saying +10000

Roof in paris are mainly covered by zinc which gives the city this particular blueish ambiance under the midst (which happens too often for many of its inhabitants). Those zinc roof being dated from Haussman great job at the middle of 19th century, they did exist during WWII.

CanonUK, do not hesitate to create similar buildings in Haussman style.

Anyway, many many thanks for your great job on this wonderful map, can't wait to fly on its definitive version !

Have a nice week end

changai, MSDomino - so, you think my Parisian blocks should be exclusively grey/zinc roofed? Lose the terracotta completely?

What about suburbs? Do you have examples of typical suburban houses from the period?

Thanks

Hi canonuk,
you have really amazing work!
btw try use in Aiffel tower alpha channel for transparent parts,it will look much realistic ;-)

Canonuk, the fact is terracota was (still is) very rare within Paris city boundaries, as MSDomino stressed.
Suburbs were far less extended in 1940 than they are today ( http://www.landkartenarchiv.de/michelin95_1940.htm ), mainly individual houses (see http://histoire-sociale.univ-paris1.fr/ ... obigny.jpg ; http://www.amtuir.org/06_htu_bus_100_an ... _tn6c1.htm ), sometimes shags ( http://histoire-sociale.univ-paris1.fr/ ... ixsept.jpg ). Terracota was quite common in Paris suburbs - probably because it was cheaper.

Hope this helps.

Now, you certainly don't have to change your textures if you're happy with them - your job is already far above out-of-the-box city textures. But if your goal is that in-game Paris roofs "feel" like real Paris roofs, then you should use very little or no terracota.

One last thing about Paris: building regulations have for a long time limited the heighth of city building walls to 16 meters (ground to top cornice), total heighth (ground to roof summit) could not exceed 37 meters. This explain why ancient Paris buildings have this very distinct "look-alike" feeling, all sporting the same number of floors. Just have a look there ( http://opccool.blog.lemonde.fr/1-limmeuble-haussmann/ - don't forget to browse through left menu items, you'll find some treasures), you'll see what I mean.

- canonuk - 14.02.2009

changai, that's fascinating - thanks. I had no idea that Paris was so regulated and uniform. I was vaguely aware of the Hausmannian redevelopment but didn't realise it was so prescriptive.

I really want to get the feel of Paris just right, so I'll use my existing city blocks for any cities aside from Paris. I'm going to make a couple of new objects that are purely Paris - Hausmannian all the way!

Many thanks

Joe
