Poncho! I studied the spitfire reticle mod and finally understood how to change the reticle, I also changed the glass texture, but UNFORTUNATELY, once again the UV's are kaputnick, the "glare" oyu see in the middle is only in a small corner on a 1024 map, and might be too small if I resize it to 512 or 256, I'll experiment. the reticle was pretty straight forward, I hope it looks ok, I might take down the glare/reflection on the glass, but it actually isn't very disturbing when aiming at planes, since it doesnt cover them, like some darn cataracts hehehe...

sorry for all the jpgs but I need to show all kinds of angles and sunlights...

Awesome job!!! It looks fantastic!

- rollnloop - 28.08.2008

It sure looks nice, but to me it's both not realistic and not practical.

-Not realistic: to me, the reflections one sees in the gunsight picture showed higher in the thread are due to use of flash by the photographer. In a dark environment, with big lights behind the camera, there is the same result, as seen in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7KvpWloagE . Though the sky does not look this way, when there is sun, there is light also around, so there should not be such strong light reflections in the gunsight. No reflection in this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Blem3FlkaMc . A very light whitish glare on the whole gunsight could be realistic, but no more imo.

-Not practical: in the current state (see pics 2 and 3) it will distract aim, when camouflaged targets are already very difficult to follow against greenish land textures.

Thanks for reading my objections, the whole cockpit looks fantastic nonetheless 8)

Thanks Thirdeye!

RollnLoop, I was thinking the sun in "the simulator" would cast a rather big highlight (similar to a flash, but from the other way round) on the gunsite's lens and reflect that onto the glass surface that acts like a "transparent mirror" But I agree, it might look too much like a flash reflection.

And only using 1/4th of a 1024 texture It feels a bit too much. I tried it a bit more last night and it was a bit more in the way this time Smile BBL with updatezorz

Actually, I think the new reticle looks a far bit more pleasant to aim with than the old one, particularly when in close view.

- ShadowGravy - 29.08.2008

I'm with rollnloop with this one. The flare looks great when you're flying into the sun...but how often are you doing that? This reminds me of the reflections (ie, the 'stains') on the inside of the Hellcat canopy that the community bemoaned and demanded be removed.

I am assuming, of course, that this flare is a permanent graphic and doesn't move around the glass or vary in its intensity based on lighting conditions.

Unfortunately I have to agree,

Technically the lense light collimation effect is directional. The texture is not moveable and all the pics show a favourable light angle. If it is to work at all in all aspects, I would think it should be aligned vertically, and be faded to be so very subtle. Unfortunately the game engine is not up to the high expectations.

Still looks damned good tho!

Can we make that an optional on the install.

Cheers,

Taurus.

Hmmm, now if it were linked to the instrument heading band class for direction changes, where the light focus would be North?

- Boosher - 30.08.2008

I can't wait to try it out, great job with the textures!

- MAHA - 30.08.2008

Awsome gunsight!!! Guys, the idea with lenz reflection and flares in the gunsight glass is realy cool.
I didn't find glass textures for gunsight and then I've used an additional plate, placed forward to the gunsight glass (additional reticle from Ki-46-Otsu-Hei AAA cockpit). This is my result: (P-39 sight)

Need some work, but sight looks better already Smile
Flushy, I've used your awesome grafic idea . What method have you used to do lenz and flare reflections?

- FlushMeister - 30.08.2008

Hey man! SWEET P 39 reticle!! I did my reflection by hand in photoshop real quick to test it out.

Thanks for the feesback yall!

Just like to point out that as the glass is angled towards the eye at 45 degrees the only possible source of reflection would be from below and that coming only from the glass lens of the gunsight. And for this to be of any import the sun would have to be almost directly above and a bit behind the pilots head to have any real effect, and it would be a fleeting one at best.

Any other reflection, not from the sun, would be pretty weak reflected from the lens. The uppermost lens may also have had an anti-reflection coating, known about since the early 1930's and particularly in Germany who led the world then, and still do according to some, in lens manufacture. That said, I believe in Revi's they were just plain glass. See here in a 109G-6?:

http://video.google.de/videoplay?docid= ... 9993&hl=de

There is also the smoked glass thingy on the revi when you are flying at the sun to further minimize any unwanted light. Finally there is the human phenomena where the brain filters out reflections to allow us to see through them. Try a shop windows with lots of reflections and you can see the display behind, then try and photograph the same view and you'll see what I mean.

Great work though, wish you all the best with the ongoing projects looking forward to download day!

so hows it coming along?

- AIRdomination - 07.09.2008

That is an AWESOME style gunsight!! Big Grin I hope this will come through to all other aircraft. Flushy, Maha; Great work.
