Hi Mr Jolly,

Thanks for the mirror mod on the E-4 variant. Can I ask, also, for one for the G-6 variant? It was historical. I do not have a scanner, but for those of you with the reference to hand who do, you'll find pics of G-6s with mirrors mounted on the opening section of the Erla canopy in the JG 300 books - especially III./JG 300 circa July 44 engaged in home defence. According to one pilot quoted (Uffz Arnulf Meyer) they were an essential mod since they spent more time struggling to check their six for P-51s than they ever did looking forwards ....

If anyone does have the books and a scanner, pictures can be found on pages 175, 176 & 177 of volume 1 of the JG 300 Wild Sau chronicles. There is also reference to them with the Brandy Schwarm (9./JG 300)

So....please 8)

That's very interesting... I didn't know there were such convertions to the erla canopy.

Gotta get the Jg 300 books. 8)

Can I also ask that the mirror be added to the F series as well

Absolutly excelent find there AJ! Second that!

Before anyone starts going on about "but but but, its cheating!", it isn't. We have the historical proof and you can't exactly "un-prove" something.

I third the idea!

so mirrors for the F-4 and G-6 variants it is

Please don't hate me, I'm just curious. Which photo presents G-6 version ?
I think that, on first photo there is F-2/4 or G-2, because I don't see MG 131 ''bubbles''.
On pictures number 2, 3 and 4 we see same plane. This is a Bf-109 F-4/R3 reconnaissance version.
I must admit, that I saw many pictures of Messer ''photo'' version with mirrors.
Reconnaissance pilots must really need it.

@ Hades: Thanks for the other view. of 4U+TL of 3.(F)/123.

@ MICHOO: The pictures I posted are of the F variants, but I didn't scan them as I don't have a scanner (I saved them from things I've found over the years off the net). That's why I can't post pics of the G-6. However, this is the post I put up on the previous page concerning mirrors on that variant:

Quote:...I do not have a scanner, but for those of you with the reference to hand who do, you'll find pics of G-6s with mirrors mounted on the opening section of the Erla canopy in the JG 300 books - especially III./JG 300 circa July 44 engaged in home defence. Hades is right, it was personal choice, but from what I've gathered, the modification was not quite as rare as some make it out to be - especially amongst single-engined reconnaissance pilots. Ultimately, just because some people don't want this mod, shouldn't stop those who do having access to it.

If sim pilots don't want to use it, then don't download it

Just wondering if anything has been done about this. I know the Wellington is soaking up a lot of [deserved] mod time, but surely it wouldn't be that hard to release??

Again, just wondering if anything was going to be done about this.

I have PM'd a moderator about the topic but have so far not received a response from them. The purpose of this thread - at least I thought - was to guage public reaction to a mirror mod for the Bf 109 series...not just the E series.

Photographic material was provided, as was reference to an esoteric research work. The sum result being that at least three different Gruppen were shown to have operated in three different theatres with Bf 109 F and G series aircraft WITH MIRRORS.

To add another piece of evidence:

The poll attached to this thread also won a majority vote - but still no mirrors on the later series 109s.

The original mirror mod was released for all 109s but then was later restricted to just the E-4, so I don't see why it would be so difficult to re-release the mod, except no limiting it to the E, F and G series.

- Brophmeister - 22.01.2009

Yes, and the old Emil mirror mod seems to have stopped working with the latest wrapper.....
