It is a rare custom mod, applied in-field (much like the '51, but even rarer) and as such we have the option of doing it for our own machines as a custom mod also. Not a bad thing either, if you consider, if you were a Me-109 pilot in real life, and you wanted to stay alive, no doubt you'd get one bolted on...

Although have a look here: http://www.mission4today.com/index.php? ... =109+photo you will need a M4T account to see the pics. Unfortunatly there isnt a Me-109 with a mirror in those pics, but as it is a rear mod, applied in custom - why not do it? I think it would be a handy wee tool, as long as you kept to the likes of the round spitfire mirror, or something simular...

With the external mirrors, like this, and for any aircraft, is it possible to actually add them to the external model of the aircraft....?

I voted yes for those who want a rear view mirror.

But I'm to much accustomed to fight in Bf109 without a mirror, so I wont use it. Then now, no more probs to check six in G2 and G6 with 6DOF Tongue

Yes, true.

The problem is how IL-2 use that mirror, you see exactly the same how in your car, this is not real, when you are riding in one of this aircraft whose engine has more than 1000hp pulling a big propeller, you can

Hmm... I can't see much justification for this at all.

Very few wartime 109s had mirrors. The first pic posted above is of a restored 109 taken just a few years ago - I don't see the relevance of it.

If you can find a wartime picture of a 109 with a mirror, please post it here. Even if you succeed, I'll tell you now, it was an extremely rare modification.

For me this goes against the spirit of the game - I look on it as a way of replicating real-life experiences. The vast majority of 109 pilots had no rear view mirror, so that's the way I like to fly it.

Just my opinion

If it was an option a few German pilots used for real, then why not? You don't have to use it of course, but if one or two people do then they should have that option surely?

I agree as well, the 109 shouldn't be represented with a mirror for the simple fact that it was a very rare item. If you give some people the option, in here, they will have every possible, rare piece added to every plane. That, IMO then misrepresents the 109 and history as a whole.

I really do not mean that to be as bad as it sounds.

I think most mirrors were removed from the 109 because thevibrations were enough that you couldn't see a thing in them. But I will vote yes because the F4F and P-51 now have modded mirrors which gives them an unfair advantage.

So begins the arms race.

Mirrors on 109's were certainly the exception.
These photos are the first I've ever seen .
Most Luftwaffe pilots found them useless.RAF and American pilots felt the same.
They were addons that were not factory installed with possibly the exception of the early Hurri, and Spit Varients. Not to say pilots ever depended on them much.
One RAF pilot commented once that he never trusted that "Damn thing".If you get fixated with the little bugger your going to get your arse kicked."
Mustangs had mirrors retrofitted. Take a good look at all the photos . Not many off them.
