Good photo!.. an interesting shot as it shows the newer national insignia on both wings of some aircraft..

Yeah, mixed up markings were certainly typical. Some with surrounds, others without. Some official bars, others likely slapped on, on top of the original star roundel.

With my BoB map I've going to sparsely populate the towns and cities - mission makers can flesh out areas of action.
However, I've put massive research into my airfields so not only are the taxi ways and runways in the right places, but so are the hangars/barracks etc. They're in the correct historical places, so they're coming with the map
canonuk, may I ask where I can find information like that?
I am redoing Tarawa; I have got the new airport laid out correctly but I have no idea how the triangular runways were used.

If you look closely, you will see that the four Corsairs lined up in a row are all F4U-1's. The two closest are still in their original two-tone paint schemes and borderless, white bars have been added to their original insignia and the bars are whiter than the dirty and worn stars. The other two F4U-1's are wearing field applied three tone schemes, note the rudder and vertical stabilizer are lighter in color than the wings and upper fuselage. These two Corsairs have fresh insignias with red surrounding the bars and roundel. Generally speaking, the red surround was only found on aircraft that had been completely repainted or left the factory with the red surround insignia.
Some F4U-1A's left the factory with the red surround on the fuselage insignia, but often the insignia on the bottom of the starboard wing lacked the surround. Some even lacked the surround on the upper port wing. You may also see some early production F4U-1A's with a roundel under the port wing. One thing you won't see is a F4U-1A with a roundel or star and bar on the upper side of the starboard wing.
There is a ton of variation in the paint and markings of the F4U-1 and -1A, making them both a blessing and a nightmare for the skinner.

Do you think the darker areas at the bend in the wing is from groundcrew rearming the planes?
- stansdds - 02.03.2008
The lighter areas of the wing are actually fabric and plywood areas, these tended to fade faster than metal areas. Also note the leading edge wing root area, the spot over the oil cooler/intercooler/carburetor air intake, it is very light because the paint has been worn away from mechanics standing on that area while servicing the engine, placing starter cartridges, adding oil and repairing anything inside the engine accessory area. You can also see the spring loaded step pad for access to the cockpit is very worn.

As the black night said..."I need some shubbery", and a few small adjustments to hardstand areas, and tower location, but that will have to wait until tomorrow 8)

I have been watching this work since day one...remember when Skunkmeister was trying to define the scope? Look how far this has gone!
No one take offense, please...but as a humble user and observer, let me give this critical advice: the map is only as good as its missions. How many of you have flown Slovakia? I have not, mainly because there are no missions or campaigns of interest to take me there.
Please get the skilled mission builders involved soon. I am not one now, though I hope to be some day. I will not name any mission builders, since I may insult by omission, but please seek then out and engage them soon.
