hi Kevin - farang65 - 01.04.2009
Here's some screenies of Manam Island and the smaller island just be for finishing map_F
Life butts in to fun and new knowledge from time to time
[img]
One question my text came up with that squiggly text that I have seen in some others ad ons for the static.ini Any Ideas on this one. I got a ? and 3 square zeros for Manam
Once I finish this project I'll make a sea bas and use some more jungle from Fabian Fred's Thai map
Also to can you round off the peeks with peek in Full FMB ?
Cheers Kirby [/img]
Hi Kirby - kevinp - 01.04.2009
Didn't understand your question about squiggly text.
About rounding off peeks, you can use the Peek tool to round off peeks if you have a wheel
on your mouse. I prefer to use the Blur tool because its more gentle.
Cheers, Kevin
Here's the finished tutorial Kevin - farang65 - 04.04.2009
Just to say once again a big
THANK YOU
to you Kevin for making an invaluable tutorial.
For me it has been a huge learning curve and now I know what goes in to these projecs.
For me I enjoyed the microdem part, painting textures and learning a new photo program Gimp.
Things I have to learn more about now are map sizes, air fields etc.
Here's the final project. I added some of JayPack 44's new palm trees to it including them in the actors static

Once again Thank you Kevin.
Now I can really get started on that previous project Vanuatu.
Cheers Kirby

Hi Kirby - kevinp - 04.04.2009
Great work.
I have just about finished a tutorial on Textures but it looks like you don't need it.
Cheers. Kevin
Anything from you Kevin is pure gold - farang65 - 04.04.2009
Hi Kevin,
I'll use any tutorial that you produce.
Your concept does help a lot of new people
Basic info and basic instructions right from the start.
I remember I read that other map tutorial and a lot of the info was difficult to take in.
especially with really no ho to's for each kind of map photo. map_c map_F etc.
Will learn about airfields this week end.
Cheers Kirby

Here is the link to my Textures tutorial (includes re-written first tutorial). Let me know if
you have any problems understanding it.

There are a few things which I have left out, mainly because I don't have a full
understanding of them yet or because I haven't found a good way of doing them.

Hi Kevin - farang65 - 05.04.2009
The new textures tutorial is awesome,
Before I played around with textures and the load.ini.
I tried changing water colour just from copying and pasting other water section load.ini's
I have replaced textures as well. I was given a North Aus map and it had rice paddies all over Townsville and Cairns had to learn myself how to change them.
Your tutorials are alays great with clear basic explanations. I was so sure about the World position part and changing wood. Other explanations I found interesting was the part about .tga-2 didn't understand that well before.
You are always giving us something to download. Another hobby to pass the time away. I appreciate all your work that goes into producing the texture library is very comprehensive especially with the wood section included.
Just an idea,
Would there be any chance of a short tutorial just on map sizes. Not so much going through the procedure of making map_c but maybe an example of a small map like Manam then a couple of medium sized maps and a very large map.
Once again the making of weverything would not have to be produced here but basically providing the formula for each map with clear examples.
Don't worry I have already given something to this community I made the mod object photo directory
which is in map tools section.
With the new roject you may get the odd question on sizes I may include New Caledonia. Ferry supplies to Vanuatu.
Cheers Kirby

I don't think this was covered in the map building tutorial, and not that it should have been anyway, since I was wondering if there is any way in which to split up an existing map and break it into smaller parts, or choose to export parts of that map.
As an example, the zip_Alpen map covers a huge area and it is just a tad too much for my system. I presume the same for others as well.
Is there any way to break it into for example, 4 parts?

Hello KevinP - another fine job - you have opened up a whole new world (literally) for me.
One question - the following is from page 13, the section on trees and tree maps for textures - and of interest to me as I keep ending up with trees where I don't want them - but it appears contradictory?
"The word "field" or "fields" has to be in the name of the texture. The
size of the tree map has to be 512 x 512 & in Greyscale.
If you don't
want any trees at all to appear on the texture, just write "fields" in it's
name." :?
Thanks again for the work putting together these tutorials!
Hi Kevin backat that other project again Vanuatu - farang65 - 06.04.2009
Before I continue with the map_f and map_ed's
I thought I'd put this across to you to see if it looks right.
All of my working out plus using the align in the c map tool.
Original colour and grey Vanuatu W 5545 x H 9005 (Bigger then the last one)
Mymap_c aligned with Redwolf's tool W 5536 x H 8992
(173X32) (281x32)
map_h aligned with Redwolf's tool W 5536 x H 8992 Same as map_c for aligning only
map_h scaled 4 times smaller W 1384 x H 2248 W divided by 4 as the H divided by 4
I think this looks right now as there was a change in the H and W after aligning map c.
OH for Agracier got your new Spain textures map great work.
Kevin I also liked the part about transfering airfields that way makes life so much easier.
I did not know you could do that
CHEERS KIRBY
Hello Viking4570 - kevinp - 06.04.2009
Yes that line does seem a bit confusing.
What I mean is that if you create a texture & include the word "fields" in its
name, then no random trees will appear on it even if you don't make a tree map.
I am trying tell you not to waste time making a tree map that is all black.
Hope that is clear
Cheers. Kevin
Hi Kirby & agracier - kevinp - 06.04.2009
Sorry, no more tutorials for now, I need a rest.
Yes, it's possible to cut the zip_Alpen map into smaller pieces but you need
to find out how to use the Actors cutter tool & unfotunately I've forgotten
how it works. Why not make your own Alps map? It would be much more
enjoyable.
Your map sizes look OK to me Kirby. When you have finished, if it doesn't
load, you could send it to me (include the colour & grey maps) & I will check
it for you.
Cheers, Kevin

a very nice work, interesting and easy to follow. Thank you

I'd just like to say thank you for a very simple and straight forward tutorial. Thanks to you, I can now handle MICRODEM, which comes in very handy at work!
Hi Kevin - farang65 - 08.04.2009
I tried three times this week to get the Vanuatu project.
Checked my calculations three times this week as well making sure Mymap_c is in multiples of 32
I used the cmapV3 tool this time
The coast aliagn tool worked perfectly finishing the bluer bar at the end.
I will re do my map_T and ed maps again.
I still get that javascript error message.
You suggested I could send/upload to you to have a look during some spare time.
The file would be about 75mb Where to upload to you?
The Mymap_c is around 55mb would you think that I would need a third ed map?
Cheers Kirby
keen to get this project off the ground.
