WIP: NEW MAP- VORONEZH FRONT - on the Russian Front - autopilot - 11.07.2008

Size 550Km by 496Km for v.4.09

I have been busy since being un-employed. My latest project
is of the huge area of the Russian front. From 10km north of
Bryansk to 40km south of Kharkov and from 70km east of the
city of Voronezh to 480Km west of Voronezh. The entire Kursk
salient of July 1943 is easily encompassed.
This area had the most ferocious air and land battles in
all of history. Battles on an enormous scale that had a
tremendous influence on the entire war.
I have started work on my Actors.static and is finally going
well. Map_c Map_H are complete. Roads and rails will finish
the Map_T and take a day or two because of the bridges.
But, I will take my time (being a perfectionist) and do my
best for this one I have learned quite a bit since my first
map which was the Kiev re-work I called Ukraine. This map
will include a more balanced focus on real-ism. A focus that
is much more feasible when you start from scratch. There has
been also the motivation to re-texture some buildings and
such and I will share them with you guys too. Retexturing
is relatively easy and is essential for the level of realism
that can be attained and is worth pursuing. One trigger for
retexturing, so to speak, is if it is out of scale. Being
out of scale is a one area that I wish everyone who does
texturing would make a top priority.
Mean while, the total time that this map will take (maybe)
another few weeks.
I must mention, anyone who has some technical info such as
air field locations rail terminals, etc. etc., or anything
else that I could add during construction I would be
delighted to hear from you.
If anyone how uses Autopop and would like to share your
templates let me check'em out. It would sure save some
time. Big Grin
Of course it will be in both winter and summer.

Thx Z, wait to you see how I dealt with the rivers. I made them look more natural.
Instead of the big blue worms they normally look like. By reducing their width and
branching them out the best I can looks much more convincing. I'll show you soon.

Looking forward to your map, my opinion is that eastern front maps need to have priority, hehe, I know most people here don't agree...
You asked about slovakia textures, I'll tell you how to get them tomorrow (too much beer already  )

edit: hehe, just noticed Zo was faster on the other thread, all fine Big Grin

This is going to be a great map. I never did like the stock Kursk map. For one thing the area was too small. This one big map will cover the whole front. You don't have to mess with several smaller maps to cover the whole area. I like that you included the Kharkov area and Orel too, even Bryansk! I'll also be looking forward to flying the early Airacobras from the Voronezh area.
The geography around Kursk is very plain like the U.S. midwest as I remember my train ride from Moscow-Tula-Kursk a while back but at least this map will be more pleasing to the eye than the old maps. Good luck!

Thx lowfighter and CzechTexan, I am obsessed with the eastern front. The more you dig in to the actual (minus propaganda) history of events of this titanic struggle, the more you will be in awe of the men who fought it.

Absolutely agree, I'm currently reading "Moscow 1941" by Rodric Braithwaite and highly recommend it.

Thx Willy Big Grin

Moscow 1941, I have not read, but very few know for instance how the Japanese played a roll in the battle for Moscow.

I wish I could download it?
