Fixing P-40 3d model. - BillSwagger - 15.05.2010

This came up before and again at the Ubi forum.

I'm more than capable of fixing parts of the 3d model of the E/M, particularly the wing dyhedral. The leg work seems to be more about converting the meshes into the game format.
For example, moving the wing also means you need to move the gear, the gun ports, as well as the flaps and ailerons and their animations.
Then there is all the LOD, and damage/collision and shadowing meshes that you don't really see, but are still there to interact with in the game.

I'm able to edit the meshes simply by exporting them into Gmax and making the appropriate fixes. Its actually a very simple thing to do, but then exporting the meshes back to the game seems like a lot of work for one person.

My thinking is that there a few 3ds geniuses on here who use the same formats, so i was seeing if anyone would want to covert a few meshes cutting down the time to make these fixes.

For me, i'd like to see the correct model, but i'm not all that disatisfied with the current one, so its not something i would spend hours converting just so it looks right.

It seems easy enough to do and could be done much faster and more efficiently with a few more hands.

Same for me. I want to do better 3d for the mosquito (engines to begin), a bit like Japancat does with bf109. I'm ok with 3ds but confused with il2. I have done:
1-use sfsextractor to find original plane files in il2 .sfs files
2-extract complete plane model + textures to a folder.
3- add modded meshes if any (for example, mosquito has new spinner meshes in files/3do/...) to have complete up-to-date plane files
4- use meshconverter, open mosquito hier.him, and convert to 3ds
5- with deep exploration, convert plane 3ds (3dsmax doesn't like meshconverter 3ds format) to .max (doesn't work for me) or .rh (not sure if it's ok)
6- import model in 3ds, make changes
7-export full model with buggybuggy exporter or other?
8-compare new files with old files to identify and delete unmodified mesh (to have low filesize, for ex if you didn't modify tail mesh, or LOD1/2/3 and so on)
8-put modified files in files/3do/planes/yourplane/

after that it should work in work, but for the moment I don't know how to successfuly do step 7

I believe that the fixes you want to make have already been done - at least the wing dihedral has been corrected - by a fellow named Bee. The mod came out about a year ago. Relevant thread here:

Reading the thread again, I don't think that Bee actually did any actual 3D model corrections, though.

I spoke with Bee and he mentioned adjusting the heir file, but all it did was shift the angles of the wings with out actually adjusting the 3d work.
It works for some but its far from a fix, imo. There are gaps near the base of the fuselage and there was another thing about it that was unappealing to me that i don't remember off hand. I actually opted not to use it because i don't have a huge issue with the existing visual model. others do, so maybe that's an alternative for them.

I use Dr jones to convert the meshes into 3ds, then upload them to Gmax, make adjustments and then export with buggy buggy.
The thing is you need to use the open listener and do a bunch of copying and pasting which is usually the more time consuming part. Then you have to edit the text for duplicated mats or commands. Its not hard to do, but if one person were to attempt to convert 20 or so meshes, it would be a lot of work.
4 people converting 5 meshes would be easy.

My thinking was i could edit the file in Gmax, and then email it to those who want to help. Then we'd all be working off the same edited model, so it would be as simple as dividing up the meshes to convert and proceeding from there. This probably required that everyone be using Gmax, but i'm not certain if 3dMax is compatible or not.

Isn't Daidalos Team working on this or on there todo list, swear I read that some where

Id love to see the P-40E/M 3D model fixed in this game by Team Diadalos, it definately needs a face lift or two Tongue

Alos they need to bring out some more 1946 planes like F2G Super Corsairs, Bearcats, Tigercats, Reppu's, Ki-83, Spitefuls, Tempest II and etc
