Editing names of the towns on in-game maps :

1. create folder maps in your files folder

There is an easier way isn't there?

open your 'files\i18n\ardennes_ru' file with notepad and you see two columns of names..
eg. bastogne bastogne

change the right-hand one to liverpool or whatever...and save the file
it shows in the mini-map and on briefing map too
but of course ..only for you....other people will have original names

just the same way...the hud_log_ru file will change the messages you see on your screen

have you seen Italy online file anywhere in the 18n folder ( or desertonline) ?

this works for all maps in the game even for those with no names originally (NWEurope) ...

stay well

just found this thread and would like to know is this option (as described by fly_zo) still workable?
are there other(faster?)ways to rename town names for big map?

.... map mods structure ( wrapper wise ):

gameroot\MODS\MAPMODS\maps"desired map"\texts.txt

file you need to edit : texts.txt ( or xx_texts.txt if modded map )

so all you need is original texts.txt file ( extracted from sfs or obtained via some mod)
just replace names of towns/areas with desired ones .... if adding new location use system explained above to get right coordinates

example :

Normandy2 map

mod structure :

gameroot\MODS\MAPMODS\maps\normandy\texts.txt

texts.txt:

3756 100630 7 1 0 2 Maupertus
74307 62209 7 1 0 2 Carpiquet
40054 30666 7 1 0 2 Saint_Paul
107004 17508 7 1 0 2 Argentan
116793 86782 7 1 0 2 St_Gatien
.
.
.

green: coordinates

red: font formating

yellow: displayed text

you can have more than one texts.txt files for one map ( same map - different language or locations)

entry in map's load.ini ( or xx_load.ini) determine which file will be loaded ....

example for normandy :

load.ini:
.
.
.
[static]
actors.static
[text]
texts.txt

.
.
.

thanks fly_zo,
but if I have no texts.txt files in folders \MODS\MAPMODS\maps\"desired map"\ ?
(I have AAA_map_pack 1.2 installed).

can I just create new files with *.txt extension, fill them in with data, coordinates, etc, - as per your Normandy2 example, and then just put relevant lines in load.ini files .... will it work?

yup, absolutely but game will show only data you've putted in that txt file ( won't merge with data from default one)

and you may make renamed copy of load.ini ( with referring to different texts.txt file - xx_texts.txt) to get it as separate map ..... just add appropriate line to all.ini file

example :

dimlee_normandy normandy/dimlee_load.ini

cheers

p.s. if you need any of default texts files .... just let me know

thanks for advise.

will try to rework topography of Crimean peninsula which is 60-70% wrong...Oleg's map makers used names which has been introduced only in late 40's.
