Can someone explain why this is evil?

Why is modding new maps, better skinned cockpits, gunsights etc, bad, considering everyone using them already bought the game, and the creators are not making any particular profit out of their work, that they offer for download free?
And how is this related to the cheaters, since no one is even allowed to discuss FM changes in this site?
I mean it seems to me that the cheaters would have found a way anyway without any help from the guys over here. You should see what some people say about this site... It's rather bewildering.

"evil" is a strong word.......illegal maybe....but more to the point, is there anything wrong with what is going on here....does it hurt the publisher or the developer? Probably not. You have to have the game in order to use the mods. And since the developer has publicly stated that they have discontinued development for the series, the mods if they do anything at all have increased the life of the series and brought old users back to it and maybe new users into it (more sales from the latter group so a good thing for both developer and publisher).

But there is something very instructional to both publishers and developers with what is going on here. If you want your simulation or game to capture player's imagination and stay there...then you have to provide an open model so that your customers or partners can add free content (like what is being done here) or maybe paid content (like the other addons produced for IL2) and thus keep the simulation alive and growing alongside with increasing computing power (IL2 came out over five years ago --- that is a lot of video card and CPU evolution time) and customer sophistication (customers now expect to be able to "mod" their games).

So it would be very stupid IMO for the publisher or developer to come down on what is happening here in light of how games are moving from closed one time applications to open and semi-open models where your customers contribute actively like they do on this site to the continued evolution of the application.

Slovakia took how many years to make?

They had official sanction, so they had tools, and could likely get quick answers to questions.

In a few weeks, look at a map like the Slot. Slovakia has custom objects, etc, and looks very nice, but with a few years work it should be nice. I fully expect the Slot to be the best PTO map in PF, by far. In a couple months total work, mostly done by one guy. It'll be the best because it will actually look like the SWPA (unlike NG), because it was chosen well in terms of the area covered, and because it has better looking airfields. Imagine how much better/faster it could be with official sanction.

Screw the "evil" moniker, why is the map stuff secret AT ALL? I mean they could have made the maps outside the SFS files, throw all the parts in there that we have once extracted, tell people how to use the FMB to edit maps, and let us go to town. Keeping the map making stuff secret was dumb, IMO.

One clarification, I did the bulk of the land mass, and once I got to the part of texturing, it was way too much for me alone to work on. Also, despite the 496 000 square kilometres of area that the Slot covers, there wont be anywhere near the same number of objects that Slovakia has.

The only reason why the Slot map will be the best is because I actually asked for outside input and considered everything people told me. Right now I am lucky to have people on the Slot team that are as much knowledgeable about the area as they are passionate about the history and the events that took place there. Not to mention a high degree of perfectionism Wink Also keep in mind that prototype to beta took about 7 weeks, but correcting everything to make it fit for release may take a while longer. I like to say that it will be out in February, but realistically, it probably wont be until spring break in March before the public sees it.

I do agree that the map making stuff was dumb to keep away from the community. I know Oleg's excuse was that they were all in russian and not very user friendly, but in a matter of weeks people here managed to reverse engineer many of the maps, and in the same process created tools for making new maps which are easy to use as long as you know the limitations of the game.

By far creating new maps is one of the more useful things that has come of the hack.

That would be a P .11c lol, But yes, All i see that the AAA team are just making the game more historically acurate than before. That, If oleg wanted in the first place, why didnt he? But then i can rember some one posting, call all the TrackIR users cheaters cause they have an advantage over some. But there. possible in the future there maybe away of creating mods, with out people hacking in and making cheats out of them. Lets hope that happens.
