Fw-190A8/9 gunpods (Historical Question)
#1

First, please relocate this to a more appropriate section if one exists. I couldn't really find any that would be perfect so it's in here...

OK...I understand the MK-108 gun option on the 190A's. You trade smaller internal guns for larger ones when maximum anti-bomber firepower is required. I understand the Mk-103 pod options, again, you trade off a pair of internal guns, this time for a pair of MUCH larger external guns.

The one I DON'T understand are the dual external 20mm pods. A pair of internal guns are moved externally in exchange for the addition of another pair of the same size. There is no major increase in rounds per gun either. So for an extra pair of 20mm's you pay a drag penalty for FOUR 20mm's...

I don't get it...Why not stick to the standard 20mm's, MK108's or 103's? Unless these are really intended to be bolted on to 190F's that were delivered without wing guns for use as extra strafing/anti-bomber firepower it just dosen't make sense to me. Sp of anybody can explain that one...Please do!

Edit: Corrected typo.

Keep in mind that the 2 20mm's that the Fw-190 removes from the wing are the older slower firing MGFF from the 109E series. So the loss of two less effective (Lower rate of fire, Lower muzzle velocity) MGFF's in trade for four MG151 20mm's is a good deal. Also the addition of 2 extra 20's is actually a larger deal than you think. 20MM's firing minenschloss (Spelling?) Rounds are deadly. And the drag isnt that much of an issue if you look at the context these aircraft were to be used in. The bomber interceptors were supposed to deal with the slow lumbering B-17's and 24's
and not mix it up with the escourts. The Luftwaffe usually had one flight to engage the escourts and two others to go after the bombers.

Hope this helps!

Freiwillige:

The 20mm cannons that are removed on the A8/9 ARE actually Mauser MG151/20s. From the A6 onwards the outer cannon MGFF/Ms were replaced by default with Mausers so yes the question remains what sense it does to mount them... Anyway I stay away from these gunpods as best I can!

Well its still an extra pair of MG151's. If 109's can down Fortresses with 1 Mg151 imagine what six can do! 33% increase in 20mm firepower for roughly 10 to 20% decrease in performance.

Freiwillige Wrote:(...) 20MM's firing minenschloss (Spelling?)

Nice cleared out, loud and clear for everyone and Ur right about the Mauser 151/20 is the better - for the record, I think it's called Minengeschoss, otherwise it refers to castles (which I strongly doubt!?!)...

In one of my books, called Die Luftschlachten des 2ten Weltkrieges
it is said that these gunpods where used to improve the fire power on ground attacks

http://www.amazon.de/gro%C3%9Fen-Luftsc ... 839&sr=8-2

But these book has also some miss information, like the old K4 Myth with 2x Mg 151-15 and 1 x MK 103
as default weapons

BTW, these Myth 109 could be a cool and easy to made Frankenplane for a What If scenario ;D
