Mini-UIs
#1

Well, I'm uninstalling Il-2 (again), and this time I'm not installing it again until university ends and I have at least a somewhat free summer. After an evening of testing it turned out that half of the planes don't have engine sounds (UI1.1 plus the UI patch). I know games eat up a lot of time, and I don't mind that... but I'd like to enjoy them, rather than losing several hours renaming files and testing.

I don't mean to sound harsh. I fully appreciate the work of modders, who (for free) have turned a great sim into a marvel. And I know they're doing the best they can to make all the mods work flawlessly. But honestly, so many mods have been released it's getting hard to tell which brakes what... and constantly reinstalling the huge Il-2 and UI (plus MAT Manager and such) after I mess up something isn't fun (yes, I'm blaming myself... but with so many mods it's not easy).

I'm simply wondering is there any chance of smaller-scale UIs? Maybe grouped thematically or periodically? A 1940-42 pack, or "Western" / "Eastern" front packs etc. It would make downloading far easier, storing mods too. That way it would be easier for slappier users like me to keep track of the installed mods and if something brakes, to easily fix the problem.

The trick with installing mods is to be selective, not over-enthusiastic.

And to have several copies of Sturmovik saved on your machine.

One to play on (daily), one to test mods on (these 2 should be synchronized only after you have ascertained the mod is worth keeping or doesn't cause errors) and also a reserve backup copy of Sturmovik clean of any mods. This last is to allow a fast and easy solution to having a working version of Sturmovik, without going to the hassle of uninstalling the game and then reinstalling it all over again.

Takes up a lot of space perhaps, but it beats the time wasted uninstalling and reinstalling, not to mention the aggravation of trying to fix the game when a mod doesn't agree with it.

I love the mod aspect so i installed a clean 4.08 version with mods activated and copy paste it to a second folder with a different name where i can play about with the new addons and if i cant fix a problem i copy paste another and get a snack to eat whilst my machine does the bulk of the work Smile then resume playing with folders

Yes,
I have three game versions installed on my computer.

An original IL@1946 patched to 4.09

A very basic map making installation patched to 4.09 running on Perfect to make maps just with map making objects, wood and mods for maps..

A modded 4.09 version running on Perfect.

Yes being selective is desirable then you wont get muddled up.

I tried the Uni installer. It was ok at first but then I reverted back to 4.09 modded.

I to have spent many a week end reinstalling and uninstalling but when you see the new Korean map
or your own map project come into beng it's worth the effort.

All the new aircraft as well.

You certainly do get to know your air.ini, russian properties and weapons properties files.

Don't worry it's all a big learning curve I just wrapped my head around the load.ini with maps.

Mind you I do all this sort of thing during long holidays.

Cheers Kirby

As I said, I didn't mean to rant. I fully appreciate the work of modders.

However, I simply can't afford to have more than one installation of Il-2 on my HDD. I simply don't have enough space (maybe a backup clean one on C: drive, but definatey not enough space for a test-version). What really irritated me was that, besides UI1.1 I had only the Russian Drop/Fuel tanks mods and ~2 (fire/smoke curve/air trail) mods. But since I started early war campaigns it wasn't until later on I found most of the planes simply lacked engine sounds. So, what to revert now...? :?

Smaller packages would definately improve the experience for those of us who space-limited or have a small/single HDD.

Maybe a suggestion, but could me make a thread with tested mods? What works with what, based on player experience and arranged by topic (Eastern, Pacific, Western Front etc.).
