That is true for angled deck carriers, but with a straight deck the procedure was to come in low and slow and cut the throttle to idle in order to drop down and catch an arresting cable. The real straight deck carriers had barrier cables erected about mid-ship, so if you missed the arresting cables, the barriers would keep you from crashing into aircraft parked near the bow of the boat.
