After reading one of the current request for mods, I had thought of what I would like to see in the future. I like having to look around plot my own position, so I fly with no icons and no waypoints. But then I was thinking it wouldn't be unrealalistic to have the waypoints on, but no icons. And I mean not even yours.
Unless I printout every campain map and draw every waypoint for every mision, I dont remember the map waypoints they show in the breifings.
So mabey you could tweek the setting to not show your position but to show the route for the mission. You know every pilot worth his wings would have drawn his entended flight path on his map before he even left the breifing room.
Who wants to print out all the stock campain maps just to have one more difficulty button on? Hell, I dont even know where to find that file to even print it. Do I just hit print screen in the breifing? But if I have to go through all that, why even have a minimap in the game?

I agree....no icons should mean no icons...not even your own when waypoints are shown.

I like this idea. It's a lot more like carrying the map along in the cockpit, without having to print the thing out.
