Idea: Lowering contrail height
#1

Hello,

It occurred to me that it would be neat to have contrails at slightly lower altitudes where the aircraft can still fly properly (Il-2 artificially limits the maximum altitudes of all aircraft in the game due to engine limitations - unfortunately these limits appear at slightly lower altitudes than the contrails do).

I've no idea how to do it, though I thought I'd pass the idea along.

I was thinking of raising the contrail height since it's extremely rare to generate contrails at around 21,000 feet (lower 20's) in real life. Besides, the "environment/engine" limits don't occur until 10,000meters (30,000ft) which is much closer to where you'd be more likely to generate contrails in real life.

Better yet, make it a setting in the mission file like they did for clouds and wind variables and you can set it at any reasonable height.

sigh.....so many features to implement and so little time.....back to what I was doing.......

You can create contrails at any altitude.

The contrail altitude starts, as far as I can remember off the top of my head where the outside air temperature is -37 Celcius in ICAO, ISA conditions. (International Aviation Administration Organization, International Standard Atmosphere)
So it would be variable depending on what map you're flying.
To check this in game would involve taking a bomber that has a OAT instrument up to the altitude where it is -37C and then determining from there.

There's no standard altitude in the real world for contrails, but as a gerneral reference the ISA should be used, as that is set as the average atmospheric conditions worldwide.

Moved topic to the right place.

Please keep idea's in the mod discussion forum, not the WIP discussion forum,

Cheers.

Exactly! So on a ISA map with standard lapse rate, the contrails would start at 30,500ft.
