The land based version of it, the XP-50, actually competed for the Army Air Force's twin engine heavy fighter contest, but lost to XP-38(the future P-38 Lightning)!

It was simply too big to operate from a carrier. Maybe the Essex class would do the trick, but I doubt about it. It was not an impressive aircraft anyway, the Hellcat was available the time when it could enter to service, as a usable airplane. But than it was outdated by the Hellcat and the Corsair as well. And being twin engined, it would take more time to maintain which was usually unacceptable on carriers. US Navy didn't use any liquid cooling engined aircraft on its carriers during WWII (and usually). They tried to simplify anything what they could about maintenance.
But as a concept, it has the place in aviation history, of course.
