Some voltage questions, video card rel.

Quote:Hey guys,

I've had a lot of trouble with my onboard video chip, which is a nVidia GeForce 9200.
I have a Aspire AX3400 desktop, which is smaller than a regular PC. I'm buying a Low-Profile card. I can run games like CoD4, but with huge framedrop.
I'm at the point of buying one now, but I need help Sad

Question is: I've got a 220w PSU. But at the videocard page, at the technical information, says that the vc needs minimal 300w PSU.
What will happen if I buy it and put it in my pc?

Thanks
EDIT
I've found out the following: the shop where I bought my computer also sells a version with a ATI Radeon HD 5570 already in it. I've found the HD 5570 product page and it's saying the maximum board power is 39 watts. Will I be able to run my pc with that card? Since it comes with the same desktop, and even a better cpu?

There are 3 possibilities

a) It works
b) it does not work
c) you will see some cool blue smoke coming inside the case

I think I'll lock answer b) it does not work.

When you run a video card such as Nvidia series on low voltage, damage can result to the entire system due to inadequate power being supplied to all components.
Best bet will be to purchase another PSU. I would recommend getting at least a 850w, this way you're prepared for future upgrades.

You can check your systems ballpark requirements here:

While some will call this extreme overkill, you need to look at power output degradation over time.
As PSU's age and are subjected to heat over time, they are unable to continue to produce a consistent output power wave at their maximum range anymore.

You can find very good PSU's in the 600-800w range for under $50.00 now days.
My 1200w PSU was only $89.00 and is modular so I don't have all the extra cables running everywhere.

Hope that helps you some.
If you have any more questions, let us know.

Next year (when I have money Big Grin) I'll replace the small case with a regular sized case. And I'll put in a new PSU Big Grin
Just for Rise of Flight and Storm of War ^^
