UP2.01 campaign text in Russian!
#1

Hi,

I just installed UP2.01 over 1946 with BOE and the Italian pack, patched up to 4.09 with the skins patch. Some of the campaign selection text (Italy RA, RAF, USAAF) is in Russian. I had this problem a year or so ago when modding first caught on and it was fixed by adding some additional files. However, I installed UP2.1 just a few weeks ago and didn't have this problem. The only difference with the install a few weeks ago was that I had the enjoyr patches installed. I didn't want to install enjoyr this time around, though.

Any idea why this is happening or how I can fix it? I kept a back-up of my 4.09 folder (which works fine), so I've tried it twice now by coping the unmodded folder, re-downloading the UP2.1 torrent (linked from M4T), and applying. Same result both times.

I should also point out that if I activate the "stock 4.09" mod in JSGME, the menus are fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Gregg

*edit - after looking through the campaigns some more, the problem seems to be with all the BoE and BoE patch campaigns, a few russian campaigns, and lots of the Luftwaffe campaigns. There may be more, but I haven't gone through all of them... Any chance this is related to the BoE patch? I'm not sure if I had that installed a few weeks ago when everything worked...

Hi, malibu and welcome back to our site Smile

Gosh - it has been so long since I had this problem...

Did you activate the History Mods in your switcher? I am almost sure that it is only a matter of activating something in UP, but I got a mental block at the moment.

Also, FWIW, this is the installation order I used:

IL2 1946
Italian Pack
BoE
BoE Patch
4.08
4.09
4.09 skins pack
UP 2.01

Thanks Fireskull. I initially tried but then avoided mods because of the complexity (a while ago), but the user friendly UP 2.01 has brought me back! I can't pass up the oportunity to play with 6dof and Cert's AI mod! Those two alone make the stock game seem unplayable!

I get the problem with no mods activated, and it goes away when I activate "stock 4.09m".

I didn't activate a History Mod. I can try that later.

I did a google search and somewhere someone posted a similar problem. The advice that user got was to install BoE over the mod. I may try that as a last resort.

Well, there is always the Search here at AAS. There have been a bunch of threads in the past on this subject. Wink

Thanks. I forgot about the search function. I'm so used to combatace where it doesn't work!

Anyway, I did find a lot of posts on the subject, with few different responses to how to resolve the issue.

A very common one was just a link to a supposed solution, but the link was dead. Is this something from the old AAA site? Anyone know what it's probably pointing at?

The other common solution was to copy and paste the text from each english campaign file to its russian counterpart, since the modded .exe is defaulting to russian files. I'd rather not do this, since it will probably take a very long time. Plus, I'm not sure why this would be the issue, since, as I stated before, I had a modded install with BoE just after xmas and did not have this problem. Also, If this was really the problem, I'm not sure why it would only affect BoE campaigns instead of all campaigns.

The only thing I can think of is that I didn't apply the files from the BoE patch in Dec, and the instal order may have been different. Although I did have the enjoyr patches installed last time, which from what I read contains a fix for the russian text. I could try installing enjoyr at this point, but I was hoping to not have enjoyr installed, as I don't like wading through a ton of campaigns to find something to fly.

Is there something else I missed in my search?

Of course, the last option is to

This has a campaign focused solution and not a patch wide one unless someone has recently published one. I am sure that this narrows the search.

Ok. So, I figured this out after lots of reading at AAS and some testing.

As many already probably know (but I didn't) the MOD IL-2 .exe that is installed by the MOD installer is the russian version, so it defaults to the russian versions of all campaign content. The enjoyr BoE patch replaces the russian campaign files with ones with english in them, so the .exe still thinks it's pulling the russian files, but you get english text. I tried adding the enjoyr patch, but I still had a few BoE campaigns that showed up in russian for some reason, and I didn't really want the enjoyr patches installed this time around either. So that was not the right fix.

I was able to identify extract all the files that BoE was adding during installation to a temp folder. From there I found all files that had multiple versions of the same file, just named differently for different language. For example, you would see campaignxyz.dat, campaignxyz_ru.dat, campaignxyz_fr.dat, etc... Then I deleted the the _ru version (russian version) and renamed the version without a suffix (the english version) with a _ru on the end. Sounds complicated, but once I got a system going it only took about 45 mins.

I dropped those files into my modded install, and problem was fixed. Of course, all this is only necessary for someone who wants to fly modded BoE without the enjoyr patches.

Malibu43,

That's good!

I knew that it had to be a BoE issue and not a game wide one.

Thanks for your help along the way.

I'm hoping that my detailed explanation will help the next guy that comes along with a similar issue!
